Well, I was tuning the red one today and I suddenly developed a
metal-on-metal noise that increases in volume dependant on boost... and
it's happening at lower and lower boost pressures.

So, I'm going to assume that either a) something is coming into contact
with the vanes of the impeller or turbine, or b) the impeller or turbine
blades are coming into contact with something.

Either way = not good. I've got the Big Ball Bearing turbo on this car
and like it, does anyone have any recommendations for a supplier of
cheap turbos? I'd like to buy a new one for this car, get the existing
turbo rebuilt and use it to replace the sleeve bearing one on my other
car that has shot oil seals.

Thanks!
Todd

Well, I took off the intake pipe and... is it good when you grab the
center shaft and it jiggles both up/down AND in/out? Hmmmm...

I don't know if I would be better off to have it rebuilt or just get a
new one. I had terrible luck getting my last one rebuilt.

Cheers,
Todd

Texas Rebuild did the last one. It's sitting in my black car right now
with a rear seal that blew after 3,000 miles the SECOND time they did it.

Looking around, the old style turbos are available cheaply, and this big
ball bearing seemed to take a while to spool on the 1.6l, would I be
terrible if I replaced it with the smaller sleeve bearing unit?

Personally I always preferred the SB over the .64A/R BB on my 1.8 for stree=
