Yep, but it will interfere with your sun visors is you still have them on.

I would think the drag of the scoop would hurt gas mileage at least as much
as running the A/C, I would think.

I wouldn't believe it until I see numbers to confirm it. The scoop itself doesnt protrude any more than an inch above the windshield header, and not more than the width of the rearview mirror. You'd probably cause as much "damage" to gas mileage by holding your hand in the slipstream for the duration of your trip.

Of course, if you were truly concerned about gas mileage, you'd slap a hardtop on at all times and never run the AC, but I'm not that hardcore, and I doubt most folks are.

I averaged ~30mpg on my way down from Grand Junction to Tucson last
Saturday. That's with a stroked Uber U3 & using the scoop. It only sits
~1" over the top of the windscreen. Benefits are many.

Ok, someone might as well state the obvious.

Why not flick the aircon controls so that it gets cool air from outside the
cabin and turn the fan on to blow cool air onto your feet and/or face.

That's achieving the same result without needing the aircon on.

I'd think the top merely being down is a larger magnitude drag than simply attaching the scoop; ie if the tops already down, the
scoop is a small percentage of the "problem". Also it's going to be dependent on speed, whereas AC is always sapping your strength
at the same rate (well when the compressor's running anyway).

That's what I was getting at. If you're complaining about gas mileage from an object sticking up 1" above the windshield header, you've apparently missed the point about the immense inefficiency of running top-down in the first place.

On my 2000 all I get is warmed up air when I do that. At 80 degrees F
outside the air is warmer than that from the vents. I should someday take a digital
thermometer with me to see just how hot it is.

-----Response-----

I'm with Rick here. Anytime I use the vents, with or without fan and at the lowest heat setting I still get warmed-over
air. Only when it gets colder out (like 40 on down) do I feel cold air, and if that's the temp out, I don't need to be cooled down
;) The heater core still circulates even when the heat knob is turned down, doesn't it? I think this would be the problem, but I
could certainly be wrong.
Neat side note: on my Ram van there's a foot switch on the left that flaps open a 6X6ish square vent which spits outside air
from the underside of the vehicle. Pretty neat if your feet are getting hot, but not if the ground is wet/raining :( Never saw
anything like that until that vehicle. Only on the driver's side I think, too.

My '78 F150 has a foot operated vent like you describe for both the
passenger and the driver. Very handy, but mine leaks so winter driving can
be a bit chilly ;)

I just ordered one. I was just telling the wife last week that I wish the
Miata had old fashoined swiveling vent windows (dating myself here) so I
could use them to redirect some air onto me. This product looks like it will
do the trick at a very resonable cost.

I've been trying to order one all weekend. Every time I put in my address
and hit "Next" I'm told there is nothing in my shopping cart. Did it from
work this AM and managed to get as far as entering my credit card info.
which was denied. Tried another card, same thing.

I'm starting to get paranoid now with two orders for the same part on denied
credit cards 'cause I know they're good & shouldn't have gotten denied.
Next thing y'know, I'll be auto-subscribed to some Miata mailing list or
something.

I'll try again in a bit; maybe they had probs with the website.

Bahhh, you're both soft like a krispy kreeme (k?) donut hamburger :P

The highest Max Temperature in the city of Perth Western Australia
the last year was 44.5"C about 112"F in old speak.

Obviously living on the edge of the desert temperatures can climb
higher on cruises where we leave the city.

Well, I did work for two years at a place that was routinely reaching
120 degrees Fahrenheit (about 49 Celsius). The worst part was
starting out at a site that was 15 Celsius (or less with the wind
chill) factor, driving 5 - 10 minutes down the mountain to the valley
floor where it was already 38 Celsius and climbing. As soon as we got
to the valley floor, we'd pull over and strip off our heavy coats and
gloves! This was in the Mojave Deset, just south of Death Valley.

Also, I had to leave the hard top on my Miata for about a month since
I didn't have any place to store it. I was REAL toasty (toasted?) in
the car!

Jim,

I just ordered one without a hiccup. I had the same card denied by

maybe the credit card folks are having problems. Have you tried it at

I just ordered one today and the card info went through without a
hitch. However, even though I clicked on the correct model, they had
to send me an email asking which model I wanted. I guess their
e-commerce software has a few bugs in it.

I averaged ~30mpg on my way down from Grand Junction to Tucson last
Saturday. That's with a stroked Uber U3 & using the
scoop. It only sits ~1" over the top of the windscreen. Benefits are many.

I would love to link you to the FM site that describes it, but they took that piece down since they can't supply them right now. The Ubercharger is a cold side supercharger set up using a twin screw type 1.2 liter supercharger. It comes (came?) in various stages/configurations. The U1 was a basic supercharger and controls producing about 176 rwhp on a 99 Miata. The U2 was the same except with an intercooler and modified controls to produce about 212 rwhp on a 99 Miata. The U3 was the top end kit producing > 230 rwhp on a 95 Miata. With a 2.0 liter built engine the U3 produced 302 rwhp. All the rwhp numbers are from various dyno sheets on the FM site flyinmiata.com/tech/dyno.asp.

I drove the FM U3 last year and was very impressed. Some version of the Ubercharger was what I was saving my pennies up to buy. I am hoping that by the time I have enough pennies the Uberchargers or "Son of Ubercharger" will be back in the FM line up.

Hope this helps you.
