I will be doing the 1.6 to 1.8 swap soon and am contemplating the best
motor for my purposes. I will likley either get a junkyard 1994-1997 or
1999 motor. I plan to re-ring it, put Carillo rods in it and be done. It
will be turbo'd in the 15-18psi range. I am leaning toward the 1999
motor choice. Any reason not to choose that motor for that boost level
since I will be replacing the rods which my understanding is the weak
link on that motor?

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

seems that many are going with the 99 head at least. guess it flows better,
or is it just the solid lifters??? No forged pistons, Mike?

Mike,

The knock ( pun intended) against the 99 engine is increased compression
over the earlier cars. The 94 and earlier 95 engines are the lowest stock
compression with a slightly dished piston (8.8/1 ?). The late 95 through 97
engines are 9/1 I believe. The best combo would probably be a 94 or early
95 engine with low compression along with a 99 or 00 head.

Best part about 94-97 - stronger rods and lower compression allow
12-15psi stock. 99-00 - Head flows better but the rods are weaker and
compression is higher, although there is some debate as to which is the
culprit. Either way, above 9psi causes rods to pretzel, but if you're
replacing with Carillos it shouldn't matter. Sounds like you want a
99-00 engine.

Plus if he's going with new pistons (it wasn't clear if he was or not, but
this may sway him to get them) is that you can put in lower compression
pistons and have the best of both.

Keep in mind that there's more than just simple boost involved. The 99 and
later cars tend to make more power at the same boost. Thus it's not
surprising that they'd fail at lower boost levels...

I'd go with the 99-00 if I could find a good one.

Yeah, that too. Didn't have my morning coffee yet when I wrote that :-)
Better flow + higher compression =3D more power =3D more stress on rods at
lower boost. Plus the speculation that the rods are weaker, although I
don't know of any even remotely scientific testing that would prove or
disprove that.
