Hi all,
What temp thermostat are the turbo guys using? I was using a 160* on =
my JRSC, BBK with good results. I just changed to 180* to try to reduce =
carbon buildup, but now the J&S is sensing more knock. I know I need an =
IC, but don't want to spend the $ just yet.
What are the pros and cons of lower coolant temp?
Thanks,
Barry

Are you seeing more knock because ambient temps went up about the time you
installed the thermostat? Most Miatas run above the thermostats' temp
anyway, once they're warm.

It's a bit warmer, but previously no knock at similar temps. =
Interestingly, coolant temp gauge in dash shows no major change in =
needle position after thermostat change.

Interesting info from SSCOR just received. Stock ecu retards timing =
below 174*. Maybe the knock I'm seeing is due to timing, not =
temperature.

Keep in mind that the center of the stock gauge covers a range of about
30-35 degrees C, so you won't see any small changes reflected there. I
wouldn't expect any change after the car is warmed up anyway.

Werner,
Is your car air conditioned? Without the a/c condensor, the stock radiator
has more of a chance to do its job, letting the car actually run cooler with
a cooler thermostat.

Bill,
if the 160° thermostat does not make any difference after warm-up,
how does it come that with a 160° thermostat, the heater is much
less efficient - noticeable even at temps of about 20°C, like when
driving home on a summer evening in shorts and T-shirts. Shouldn't
the heater be just as good as with a 180°F thermostat?

Even with A/C and a big IC, in 15C ambient weather my car ran too cool
(below 85C) around town with a 160F thermostat, so I switched to a 180F
thermostat to prevent carbon buildup.

I will leave the 180* in and adjust my timing back 1 or 2*, assuming that
the stock ecu was retarding spark due to low coolant temp, alluded to in
SSCOR. Does anyone know for sure if the Miata ecu does adjust timing back
before the engine reaches normal operating temp?
