I'm re-building the head in the Miata I originally owned. 219,000 miles and the
exhaust valves looked really ugly (virtually concave rather than flat
surfaces); valve lapping wasn't working but Corky was kind enough to allow me
access to the lathe in his machine shop so I could reface the valves (Thanks,
Corky!). On the bright side, the cylinder bores look beautiful; no ridge at the
top and the hone marks are still visible with no undue wear marks. :-)
My question is this: the shop manual calls for special service tools for
replacing the valve seals. I figure I can use a pair of bent-tip needle-nose
pliers to remove the old valve seals. To install the new seals, however, the
shop manual calls for a special service tool to place the seals 19.3 mm off of
the spring deck. Do these seals just snap into a groove or do they clamp onto
the valve stem? Can I just lightly tap them onto the valve stem until they snap
into place?
Advice from anyone who has done this is appreciated.
Regards,
Barry

I was just looking at that yesterday. If you have access to a lathe,
you can make the tool needed to remove the valve guides

I was able to push them into place (or tap lightly) using a long 10mm socket.
Just check the height to make sure they are fully seated. I don't think
you can push them on too far without using a lot of force. Helps to oil
them.

I thought you were talking about the valve guides, not the seals. My
manual has the specs on how to make a tool (with a lathe) to remove the
guides, but I don't know about the seals. I don't have the manual
handy.
Since I realized that I was going to answer your question incorrectly, I
decided not to reply, but I must've hit send instead of close.
The manual I refer to is Rod's ehtusiat's manual.
Also, I'm not sure if there is any difference in the 1.6L or the 1.8L
engines in this regard. My manual is for the 1.8. What size motor is
yours?

I tap new seals in with a deep 12 point socket. The right size will rest on
the metal part of the seal and let you tap the seal down till it clicks.
Works very well. I'm looking into building a seal puller. Goodson has a
puller for $130 that is like a big pickup tool. 4 hooked tabs that fit
around the seal and a tube that slides down over them. Slide hammer to pull
up. If you use anything else in the lifter bore you might think about
wrapping tape or something around it so the bore isn't cratched.
For driving in guides the best bet is the correct tool from Goodson. Only
about $8. It is specially machined... Some people do use just a hammer....
THat works too...

I was able to simply push them on by hand, they make a
solid pop when they seat on the ridge.
