Hi all,
I am experiencing a abnormally loud high pitch noise from the T28
turbocharger. The noise is most noticable when the boost gauge indicate
4 psi and above. Spool up time seem to be ok. I checked the oil inlet
line tonight and there is a steady oil flow. There is a small amount of
play on the shaft, but the shaft seem to rotate freely. Anybody have
any idea what caused the noise? How much play on the shaft is too much?
Corky?

Maybe it's a shriek from a vac (boost?) leak? Slightly loose clamp anywhere
on the route from turbo to intake.

Time to do some filling in on what's going on with the FM ecus. Lots of
activity on this list regarding a/c, idle problems, etc. I'll cover what's
being done later, but first wanted to unburden myself a little bit.
What we're doing with the ecu and the way we're soliciting feedback from
our customers realtime on this list is somewhat unique, I believe. You are
getting to see development done with our pants down, to put it crudely.
Link has been very responsive to deal with and can now send us new software
to test immediately. We are having a hard time getting the reprogrammable
window chips from Motorola. Had to fill out a form proving we weren't
building Scud guidance systems and now they're telling us a huge lead time.
Don't want to (and can't afford to)send out a huge number of one time only
processors only to find we have better software the next week. As soon as
we have processors to burn, will send latest software to everyone on the
lifetime software upgrade list.
Spoke to Link last night, suspect that the switching threshold may be off
for turning on the compressor in the 1.8s. It works fine in our 1.8, but
may be close enough to the switching threshold that it will not always work
in all cars. This is a software fix. On the a/c fans, we have spent more
time in the manuals to see how Mazda does them and have changed the
software accordingly. Also making changes in the way the idle is controlled
when the a/c is on to limit idle speed changes.
Another big change in the software is that the idle zones are now treated
as though the keypad is unplugged and are limited to only 3% correction if
rpm is below 2,000 rpm. New software also has n/a defaults in it with all
six MAP rows below atmospheric. 1.6 owners, don't feel left out in the
cold, we are simultaneously working on the 1.6s.
Spent some time in the last week datalogging the stock ecus with a custom
datalogger. Quite interesting seeing how active the timing curves are under
acceleration. I believe a lot of people think that setting their idle
timing sets the whole scale, whereas in reality, the timing runs from ten
at idle all the way up into the 40s at cruise and back down into the
twenties under load.
We are truly working night and day to make this the most convenient,
easiest to use ecu available; your feedback is invaluable to us. Once in
awhile, just to make me feel good, fill me in on a couple of the things
that work well with the system.
Thanks for listening!

I think you should feel great! You've really developed a wonderful
product. I'm sure nobody knows how much time and money you've spent on it,
but I, for one, am really proud to own one!
I'm very happy with the way mine is working. With this latest version of
"The Chip" everything is perfect. I don't have ANY of the classic
problems. (The Knock Control and Boost Control aren't too good, but it's a
1.6, so I'll be patient.....) It learned fast and has stayed very
cosistent. It runs smooth, idles smooth, AC on or off. Mileage is up over
the last version. Baby don't need no steenking keypad!
Thanks for all you do for us!

Not sure what your setup is , but after I installed by BEGI System III
I had a high pitched whirring noise during boost conditions. It turned out
that one end of the mitsu surge valve had slipped off. Visually it
looked fine, but as soon as I tugged at the valve I noticed it had slipped
out of the orange pipe connector.
Good luck,
Joe
