Imagine a touch-sensitive display mounted in your center console. It can
show you your engine's RPM, A/F ratio, manifold air pressure, injector duty
cycle, and throttle position graphically for the past 30 seconds or so,
continually being updated and easy to read at a glance, as well as being
customizable. You'd also be able to log all these parameters and more as
you drive, and add notes to the log by pushing one of four buttons. The
screen would automatically light up after a certain time of day with a
green glow.
Once you've parked, you can use the display to replay your drive, recalling
all engine parameters at any moment with a simple tap on the graphs. You
could also download the data into a computer for even more analysis, or
recall a previous drive for comparison. You could also review all the
ignition and fuel curves and do graphical analysis of the A/F ratio.
Oh, did I mention that it could keep track of your schedule, give you a
place to jot down notes, draw diagrams, or keep a list of what you have to
do? And store works of fiction for you to read at your leisure.
Science fiction? No. I've got one in my car, but it's not hard-mounted
yet. It's a PalmPilot hooked up to my FM ECU and running Mike Inman's
AnaLink. I'm seriously considering buying another to install permanently
in the car and wiring it into the car's electrical system. Total cost (if
you have an FM ECU and keypad) would be about $350 US. For more
information on the software, watch this space....
