hi.

ii bought a block with a head on it and i would like to test it before
putting it into my miata..i will have to put the timing stuff on but can i
fire it up without the ecu and just the fuel rail? i dont think so but
maybe you know something i dont.

Probably best to take head off and do a visual inspection of the
valves and seats. Also check flatness of head.

i thought about this...once the head is off, isnt it almost guaranteed to
need planing while if left on, it may retain a flat-ish edge?

Do a leak down if you want to know something about the engine but at this
point you own it so put it in and use it and be done with it.

Pulling head will not distort block or head. Just follow correct =
tightening sequence when re-installing, and remove head with reverse =
tightening sequence.

Only hand cranking you need for a LEAKDOWN test is maybe two rotations of
the crank. Read up on leakdown tests--they're very different from
compression tests.
