John, take a look at www.perfectpower.com. =20
I seriously considered trying one of their Smart Tuners or Ignition and =
Fuel Tuners instead of rolling my own. The price of their boxes is =
attractive - $160! Although they are located in South Africa, they =
will ship to the US. The boxes are downloadable through a serial port =
as you described. =20
In the end I didn't go that way for several reasons. For one, they said =
they had done a Miata, but the ignition control was 'tricky'. I =
couldn't get them to elaborate. (They're not big on application support =
- they're more of a supplier to tuners who know what they are doing.) =
For another, although the boxes have a temperature input, it is mapped =
to fuel only, not timing, and it requires their temperature sensor (or I =
would have had to hack a converter to the Miata's). Also, their RPM map =
is a little too coarse to suit me, although it could probably be made to =
work. When I added this all up, I figured that I would probably spend =
as much time getting their box tuned as doing my own, but I would still =
be left with a few minor limitations that would prove to be irritating =
to me. =20
Now, if someone else were to pick up one of these things, tune it up, =
and share it with the rest of us...=20
As far as fuel goes, there's only so much you can do by messing with the =
stock ECU inputs. I'm happy with this approach (for now!), but I think =
to get the control that you want you would need to mess with the ECU =
outputs, disconnecting the ECU injector outputs altogether and run them =
piggy-back, like Shiv is doing with the TEC-II. That means adding =
injector drivers and perhaps a more robust processor - I've already got =
my hands full just with timing, so I'm afraid you won't see that from me =
anytime soon.=20
Perfect Power does have a full engine control unit at a reasonable =
price.=20

Dick, you are half way to a Link ECU. Add the injector timing values =
and we are there. Now if you could provide a MAP sensor, keypad and =
screen along with it for about $700 we would build a monument to you. =
Actually if it were loadable from a PC through a serial port for our =
various configurations I thing we would be quite satisfied. Go Dick =
Go!!!!!
