The dyno tuning thread reminded me of a thought I had a while back.

I've always wondered if such a thing exists, and if not, could it be
produced much cheaper than a full dyno:

The local Superflow dyno uses some type of locomotive brake, controlled by
some electronics to hold a vehicle at a certain RPM while tuning is being
done.

So you'd need a roller, and a properly controlled braking system that would
compensate in realtime for torque changes. Could something like this be
produced at a fraction of the cost of a full dyno, without the capability to
produce torque/HP figures? The idea being that you tune with your WB02,
then take the car to your local dyno shop and get the numbers, if you even
care what they are.

I have a pretty limited knowledge of the specific workings of a dyno, so
maybe what I'm explaining is 90% of a complete dyno, and the numbers come
from simple physics equations?

Anyone?
