Hey,
This is a pic of the "Monoposto" one-seater show car built by Mazda a couple of years ago: <bilner.com/jpg/monopostohoodpad.jpg>
On the interior and the underside of the hood they used a very shiny silver fiberglass-backed heat barrier material quilted with actual stitching (as opposed to heat stamped perforations) in a diamond (not square) pattern at about 1.5"-2" increments.
I've been looking for this material off and on for months. I talked to Mark Jordan at Mazda; the upholstery shop that did the work; a regional rep from 3M; and seemingly all the auto upholstery supply houses in Orange County, CA--all dead ends only making me more determined to find a source. I just know it's got to be an off the shelf material that you can buy by the yard (somewhere), not something you have to have custom made for hundreds of dollars for a damn hood pad.
Thanks for any leads and happy holidays to everyone on the list!

Looks to my like the life-preservation blankets carried by forest fire
fighters that has been cut and trimmed to fit the underside of the hood.
FWIW, I'd spend my money on hood louvers to let the heat out, not on a
blanket to keep the heat in!
