Bob,
I just did the same job on my 90 and I had to use a hammer and punch. I
was shocked at how far down the a-arm swung. The replacing goes a lot
easier. Hope that helps and good luck.

AT this point you should probably consider removing the entire lower A-arm
with the shock attached. No biggie there, just pull the concentric adjuster
bolts and the outer lower bolt at the hub and it will come off, (assuming
you already have the sway bar disconnected).

Once you have the A-arm off, perhaps you can create access to the previously
captured nut and either weld it back on, (local muffler shop), or find a way
to hold it while you remove the bolt.

At this point, it may just be simpler to buy a used lower A-arm from one of
the guys on Miata.net parting a car or from a wrecking yard.

Remember, penetrating oil is your friend. Soak overnight, then hit it again
five minutes before you start in on the job. (Yeah, I know the shocks
usually come off ok.)

Hope that offers some light at the end of the tunnel.

Eric

problem solved...
thanks to Gary Spray from the big list and also Greer Reichow from the=20
power list.

managed to enlarge the hole at the bottom with a dremel tool big enough=20
to get a 19mm open end inside. was able to break the nut loose from the=20
bolt a remove the shock.

we then made the hole even a bit bigger and put it back together with a=20
donor nut from my old beetle. all is well.
