Ok.. I appreciate all the help you guys gave me in better understanding the
different differential type and applications..
I have a 97 with the FMII, running 210-250 rwhp. The car is a daily
driver, driven spiritedly, with occasional track (road course, not drag or
autocross) use. I have located a used 3.90:1 LSD out of a late 80's RX7
for $150. On a scale of 1 to 100, 100 being the best and 1 being the POS
open rear I have now, how would that rear end stack up (for price, and
application)? My guess is it is a 80% fit.. with the torsen being 100, but
too costly.. I am "frugal" :)
For what I want to use the car for, will that rear end be enough of an
improvement or am I really better off waiting for a torsen?

Do you mean early 80's?
The late 80's 2nd gen RX-7's only had LSD's in the 4.10 5-speed rear. The
automatics had the 3.909 with no LSD. The early 80's RX-7's had 3.909 rears
but they had small diameter axles which will not work. You need the LSD unit
from the 84-85 1st gen or the 86-88 2nd gen. Only the gears from the 1st gen
swap as the 2nd gen are of the long pinion design.

Ok, I must have my facts screwed up... per
members.aol.com/solomiata/MiataVLSD.html
"FYI, The '84-88 NA RX7 Clutch type LSD will bolt into the later 1994+
Miata housing (the 1989-91 RX7 is a viscous). If you will be drag racing or
road racing the car then you could consider that combo since it will better
launch the power of a highly modified motor. This unit does have
replaceable plates. "
I take that to mean that 84-88 will fit (clutch) and 89-91 will fit
(viscous) (according to the web page above, yours, correct?) but they are
all 4.10 (according to your mail below) if they are an LSD. So, If I find
a 84-91 RX7 LSD rear, it is a 4.10 and if I find a 3.90 rear it can't be an
LSD (unless it was converted to a 3.90).. correct?
Any help by you guys to help me find the right rear would be appreciated..
I've never had to identify a rear end by gear or LSD/nonLSD so this is a
new area for me and I am clueless. Also, I gather that a TurboII rear will
NOT fit in my 97 without some modification of for the PPF (what is a
PPF???) which comes from that page above too.
So, let me riddle this (I'm a little slow today, I guess):
Since this whole swapping process really has me annoyed, putting in a Miata
LSD would solve it.. If I was to look for a LSD out of a Miata, I want a
94-97, an "M", "R", PEP or a Leather package.. right? Is there any way to
discern it will be an LSD from a VIN number? I don't see a way to do it
unless I am missing something.. basically asking a junkyard for a leather
interior car then getting the rear out of it would be the way.. yup?

Is your question regarding the ring/pinion, the case, the carrier, or some

(what is a PPF???)
Power Plant Frame.
Basically it is a long piece of angle iron that connects the
transmission to the diff. I have never done this install so I don't
know if you will need to shorten the PPF and drill new holes or what.
But that is basically all you are doing is making the length and bolt
pattern fit the new rear.
If this is the rear end I think it is then shortening will definitely be indicated.

I want to swap out to a LSD on my 97.. so, what parts do I need? I am
assuming the differential unit only (Carrier?) if I swap in a 94-97 Torsen
out of a Miata.. yes? (not counting all the gaskets and little crap.. just
the parts from the junkyard I would need to find)
I need an LSD, I assume if I buy it from a junkyard it will be with ring
and pinion gears.. probably no case..

>>I take that to mean that 84-88 will fit (clutch) and 89-91 will fit
(viscous) (according to the web page above, yours, correct?) but they are
all 4.10 (according to your mail below) if they are an LSD. So, If I find
a 84-91 RX7 LSD rear, it is a 4.10 and if I find a 3.90 rear it can't be an
LSD (unless it was converted to a 3.90).. correct?
Almost. The 86-91 rear is a long pinion design so the gears do not fit so
disregard them than determining if it is a LSD or not. If it is a 3.909 is
cannot have a LSD since they were auto only. If it is a 4.10 it is a 5 speed
and it may or may not have an LSD.
84-85 might have an LSD if it is a 3.909 and a 12a. The 4.083, 4.077, 3.933
also may or may not have an LSD.
>>Also, I gather that a TurboII rear will
NOT fit in my 97 without some modification of for the PPF (what is a
PPF???) which comes from that page above too.
yes
Since this whole swapping process really has me annoyed, putting in a Miata
LSD would solve it.. If I was to look for a LSD out of a Miata, I want a
94-97, an "M", "R", PEP or a Leather package.. right? Is there any way to
discern it will be an LSD from a VIN number? I don't see a way to do it
unless I am missing something.. basically asking a junkyard for a leather
interior car then getting the rear out of it would be the way.. yup?

The original number is MMO2-27-200A, it supercedes to MM03-27-200
That is the loose Torsen type 2, good idea to get side bearings as well.

Yes, just the carrier, plus maybe a new pair of side bearings for it. No
gaskets needed fortunately since the case uses only a very thin film of
silicone rubber to seal it.

OK...what about the KAAZ clutch type LSD? Is it a simple "drop in" install
for a '97 or is it more involved than that?

OK...what about the KAAZ clutch type LSD? Is it a simple "drop in" install
for a '97 or is it more involved than that?

Around here, "3rd member" means the case and all contents, while "carrier"
means the housing that carries the spiders and clutch pack, minus the ring
gear. Is your definition the same? Are you saying that the RX-7 carrier
won't fit into the Miata case but clutch pack will fit into the Miata
carrier along with the Miata spider gears?

No. A "3rd member" and "carrier" in my language means the front pinion
housing and LSD assembly. The RX-7 front pinion housing will not work in a
Miata without fabrication because of the long pinion. The LSD unit itself
bolts right in.
This is the RX-7 clutch type LSD unit from my web page -->

When you have it attached to the tranny and loosen it from the diff
WITHOUT ADEQUATE SUPPORT and it smacks you in the chest and you have to
lever it up it feels like steel.
Actually all I remembered was the shape and attachments more so than the material.
