Hey everybody,
Just for giggles I've been looking at propane as an alternative fuel.
I've got a 500 gallon tank of it in my back yard, so it's a bit tempting
to see how to run the car on it. Most of the google searches come up
with what is essentially a carburetor conversion.
Assuming I already have a programmable ecu, does anyone know what else
is required to run propane? I can't find anything on injecting it in
liquid form.
Thanks

Propane injection is somewhat common in Japan actually. The system is a
vapor injection system. The "injectors" are really duty solenoids with an
orifice tuned to the fuel pressure and engine needs (like gasoline). There
is also a regulator in the system taking the fuel pressure down to 10psi or
less (if I remember right). This is a very viable system but not one I'd
like to takle on a one-off retrofit basis. Too much design and development
involved.

Propane may be a good high octane (but low BTU) fuel, that IIRC any gasoline
motor can run on without modification.
Just need a mixing valve off of a CAT or whatever you build.
Unfortunately, the price of LPG rides the price of gasoline and has gone
thru the roof.
CNG compressed natural gas, is the cheapest fuel out there right now, and
has similar properties IIRC give or take some BTUs.
Probably won't be long before it is rediscovered, and heads up in price as
well.
On diesels the LP improves combustion, even on NA motors by burning the
diesel fuel cleaner, if added in small quantities. I have tried it will
pre-detonate even at cruize if too much is added on a 25:1 IDI. The HP gains
are modest, not so on a turbo diesel.
The 103 octane some reported sounds interesting...

North America produces just about the most natural gas anywhere. Dallas and
Austin Texas have pipes coming out of nearly every mall and church parking
lot.
While not on my near or midterm plans someday I plan to look into CNG
conversion.

I am considering it myself. .The only gasser I could convert is a 82 =
Mazda pickup, probably a good candidate anyway, with plenty of underbody =
space on the longbed for cylinders.
I am turning my LPG tank (fireplace back to wood) and see if it is =
possible to get CNG, (no piped in gas here yet) although I am sure =
filling a portable tank is a no no, would have to get a pump.
Hopefully doesn't loose too much HP as it has little to spare.
I see no reason not to make a multi-fuel vehicle, cheap to run, and can =
burn gasoline as needed. I think this would be a cool project.

I am not running the Mazda pickup much because of its dismal 22MPG, =

We use propane for heat, cooking, fireplace, and grilling (of course!).
The delivery vehicles I'm told all run on propane -- I know for sure
that a service truck that came out for a small leak was running propane
and it was that individual that told me all the company's vehicles ran
on propane.
It can surely be done.
