I have to agree in spirit with this conversation, at least for what I am
looking for.
I spec'd my car to be really streetable - so for the 1.8 conversion, I used 9.5
CR pistons and for the F/I, I have the FM II 1.6 turbo. To me that was a great
set up ... the CR allowed for much better low end than I had with my 1.6 with
lower CR pistons and the turbo had very quick spool up.
Yes the car was fast in the upper ends ( it would break rubber in 3 gears - when
floored and when in the power band ) - but if I wasn't at full throttle invoking
the full boost, it still was quick. Took some control. A draw back is not
having an exhaust that is tuned for N/A ranges. If it was possible to have an
exhaust capable of transitioning ( ie some restriction - then open up in the
boost areas ), that would be trick !
I hope this combination did not lead to my early engine demise - I'll know more
on that in a 1 - 2 weeks, when we get the engine out.

In the early Mistu 3000GT VR4s, you could adjust the 'exhaust volume' inside
the car. They called it a volume setting, but it actually increased peak hp
with over 20hp! :)

That is a great Idea. My 350 camaro with a mild cam and big duels got 8 highway
MPG with this setup. When this got torn off due to an erant cell operator on a
curb, I replaced with a take off late model 1>2 "y" pipe duels. With this change
alone the mialage went up to 15 MPG on the highway!. Buterfly valves are
available from Whitneys and others and could be set to open at boost with a
pnumatic acculator. I bet this could increase cruzing mialage, although the turbo
and learning FI might cause other problems. Mabe a temporary valve on the exaust
tip could tell the story. The camaro had such valves "dumps" using a flex cable,
but were very low and contributed to removing the exaust.

If I remember correctly, the ultra-rare street legal 69 ZL1 (aluminum 427!)
Camaro came with either big honkin' Cadillac type mufflers or, as an option,
straight pipes with big crimps in the middle, as if the car had been hoisted
on a lift by the pipes. Either way, it lost over 100 HP in the effort to
sound quasi legal. You'd think that modern technology could provide a more
apt solution!
While perusing the owner's manual on my Son's beloved, if ridiculous, Mitz
3000, I noticed that it has dual stage exhaust, with (presumably) "social"
and "anti" settings. I barely recall lusting over J.C. Whitney's cable
operated exhaust cutouts -- such an obvious improvement over mere Lake Pipes!
Ahh, so much for reverie. Gotta go find a shop irreputabe enough to weld a
pair of SuperTrapps onto ol' Rocinante.
