I responded privately because I thought this was a no-brainer. When I have
a tire plugged, I check it for a few days to make sure it isn't leaking,
heat cycle the tire a few times to vulcanize the repair. Then I forget
about it. I rotate tires and forget which one has the plug. I drive fast.
Whatever. Maybe it is a no-brainer. I have no brain.

Somebody find credible data (not a story about some guy you know) that
properly installed, in the tread, plugs are prone to failure.

That said, the tires currently on my Miata do not have any plugs. I have
not run a track event on a plugged tire. But I would. Have you seen the
tires at a race track? Racers are cheap, tires are run to death. Tread
gone, cord showing, heat cycled to rock-like surface, pressures all over the
map, tires overheated, carcass separation, air leaking out of the bead,
leaking through the three piece wheel, flat spotting..... I've seen it all.
Would a plug put my tire on a different planeet than all those other abused
pieces of equipment?

I'll second Lance's confidence in tire plugs. I used to work for a UXO
disposal company. We had a fleet of vehicles running across hydro axed
terrain picking up everything from branches, antlers to .50 cal blank
casings. We put in an average of 2 plugs a day into different tires,
including side walls for all you nay sayers. I never saw one fail. One thing
I will mention is the ministry of transport here in Canada has banned the
push in plugs for use on highways here. You can use the pull in, with patch,
from the inside which of course means unmounting the tire. We never bothered
with that step as our vehicles were off road only.
