As some may already know, my M2 was stolen from a public parking garage (in
San Francisco) a few weeks back. Vanished within a two hour window of time.
Pretty strange considering that it looked quite innocuous (just wheels an a
roll bar distinguishing it from other Miatas) and was parked among Jags,
Infinities, Bimmers, and other big-$ uber-cruisers.
But just the other night, I got a call from the SFPD saying my car was found
lying on the street devoid of license plates. Today, after two days of
police finger-printing, I was finally allowed to see it and get it towed
home. While the body is still in good shape (just a few scratches a couple
dents), all the good stuff has been removed from the car.
HD roll bar, 2 TEC-IIs, custom-cut Magnecor ignition wires, TEC-II serial
cable, four 550cc/min RC injectors, TEC-II crank trigger, TEC-II pick-up
mount, JR supercharger, wheels/tires, etc,. All removed in haste. It's
quite obvious the thief knew what he was doing and knew what the cool parts
were. In fact, he also tried to remove JR header but was thwarted when he
realized it takes a lot of pulling and yanking in order to clear the
steering rack. Lazy thief.
All they left was the boring stuff (engine, tranny, diff, suspension, seats,
etc,.) Enough to keep it from being a total. But not enough to make the
rebuild process quick and easy. Oh well, time to pick up a wrench again...
sigh...
As for the thief, he's still at large. So... if anyone sees a blow out of
cool Miata go-fast parts being sold on the street corner by some shady
character, be sure to let me know :)
Cheers,
Shiv

Shiv,
That sucks! I didn't know your car was stolen!! I'm
glad it's back, but what a horrible feeling to find
all the goodies stolen.
Which, BTW, is very suspicious I think. It sounds
like they knew your car. How many people have even
heard of the TEC? Plus they knew to grab the
injectors. Maybe they checked out your Miata at an
autox or other event.
Good luck catching those bastards. They'll either
sell the gear or use it themselves. Either way, this
is a small, connected group, so they will probably
reveal themselves eventually.

Wow, that really sucks....... Curious, are you going to go the JRSC route
this time around, or do we get to see what magic you can do with another
system ;-)

Shiv,
Sorry to hear about what happened !!!! Especially after all the time and
energy. As has been mentioned by others, it does seem like you were marked.
We all do hope you recover quickly, treat it as a minor set back and come back
stronger than ever.
Dan
PS This even seems worse than the usual blown engine syndrome.

Shiv,
It almost sounds like the thief knew your car. I mean I heard from people I
know hear in South Florida that have had their car stolen and the stuff
they've taken and how it was done was too good if you know what I mean. It
was like they knew what the stuff was and how to get it. How would the
average thief know what a TEC II was or looked like?

Got a feeling this guy (or gal) knew what was in your car. That is, someone
knew it was yours, and that someone probably lurks about this list or SCC.
I'll be more careful where I park mine from now on.

Ron that's an interesting point. Like you said, what was in Shiv's car is
not common knowledge nor common for a miata. So someone had to have known
what was in it and that was his car...
The interesting thing is that we all need to realize that it's possible to
be "stalked". All of our pride and community in sharing our rides "Ooh,
check out these pictures of what I did to my car..." could lead to someone
saying, "Hey that's nice, and that guy lives near me..." A shame really.
Words of advice:
If possible, use a web-based email address (yahoo mail, hotmail, etc) to
post to any public forum or list.
Post your pictures to a photo sharing website or to a national ISP. Don't
give away where you live by where your pictures are hosted.
It's obviously ok to talk about where you live in general (meets,
autocross, etc), but try not and talk about where you live specifically
(subdivision, etc)
Or course, I'm currently violating all these rules, but I thought I'd
throw them out there.

Shiv was obviously setup. That car, which I saw in person, would not have
gotten more than a second glance from most people. It looked very plain
jane. The fact that they did not take the motor and rear end tell me
that. The rear end would not have been hard to take if they had wanted it,
given the fact they went for the header. The rear end (not common
knowledge) was not a torsen though, so it had no value. The thief was only
after the aftermarket parts... and for good reason... all the other parts
should have the VIN stamped on them.
Mark
PS - I think I should etch my VIN into all my aftermarket parts.
PPS - I had already talked to shiv about his loss, but to be public about
it, you have my sympathies Shiv!

Wait a minute here... I'm detecting a trend...
Shiv let's buddy drive miata - buddy flips car.
Shiv takes RX-7 to shop - shop wrecks car.
Shiv parks car - thieves take car and ripped all the good stuff...
Seems like Shiv upset his karma somewhere along the line... (was that Shiv
in possession of the RX when it got wrecked? I can't remember...)
In all sincerity, my condolences, Shiv, when my car was broken into last
October, it really made me lose faith in things for a bit. However, you
realize that it's just a random occurrence and not a reflection on people as
a whole.
Take a GOOD look at everything in / on / under the car, make sure
everything gets on the insurance list, and don't sign a release until
everything is fixed, there could be damage to suspension, engine or
transmission that you don't see... also, any scratches of interior pieces
add the repair $$$ up really quickly, so pay good attention and maybe you
can get it to total status...
Good luck and keep us posted, will we be seeing a security system write up
in SCC?

Cheers,
Shiv

I had an extra TEC-II kit in the trunk. I was going to drop a kit off, in
the morning, to a customer in SF.
What's ironic is that this was the first time I, for some reason, didn't
activate the little kill switch I wired into the TEC. Figured I was being
overly paranoid about my car ;) Shows that you can never be too paranoid!

Nope. I had just been dropped off home (5 minutes away) by the Big O
shuttle van when I got the phone call that the car has been "involved in an
accident"... with a parked BMW, a chain link fence and an office building.
It was driven by a Big O employee who didn't even have a driver's license at
the time (got revoked). And all I wanted was a brake fluid flush :)
