A little Saturday evening prose ....

As was stated in an earlier chapter, gas was leaking from my number 2 injector.
Hoping that it was just the O ring seal, I decided to replace them all. Had
excellent feedback from the list on a couple options ( thanks to all that
responded ). I bought some Honda Civic O rings ( for a '98 - in case anyone
else is interested in this route ). They were $1.87/piece and came
individually wrapped. I also bought stock Miata O rings - $2.40/piece and they
came loose. The Honda O rings were about the same diameter but much beefier.

Honda parts seemed like a much better deal - I ended up using these.

Install took about 45 minutes ( would have been much shorter - but once the old
O rings were out, I took 15 minutes inspecting the suspect one. I couldn't find
anything wrong .... ). Used some WD40 to lubricate the new ones and put them
in.

Started it up - no leaks. Went for a 20 minute drive - still dry. I'll keep my
fingers crossed.

Has anyone used or have a perception of Royal Purple Motor Oil. Clint swears by
it and it seems to be readily available in Houston. Since I started breaking
the engine in on this - I'd like to keep using it. Found this on the web:

I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts on this.

I've been reading up on elec boost controllers ( since I have the old Mark 1 FM
1.6 ECU ). Well reading might be an overstatement - I've been looking at the
ad's. Not exactly unbiased info!

There seems to be some deals on used one's ( $200 - $300 range ).

The ones I've seen are:

Fuzzy logic ones - HKS EVC IV and Profec A ( or just Profec ).

Non-fuzzy logic models - HKS EVC II, Profec B and Blitz single & dual
solenoids

Also seen an HKS EVC III for sale - not to sure which side of the fuzzy logic
fence it falls on.

>From what I can tell - a lot of these are on the market because people want to
buy ( particularly Diamond owners ) the Super APEX AVC in combo with a Super AFC
( boost controller & fuel computer ). I guess everything from APEX is Super !
Not to sure FM ECU's need/desire this ......

Anyways - from what I can tell:

The electronic ones have a bit better control than the manual ones - they take
their signals off of absolute pressure as opposed to gauge/atmospheric pressure,
so should be more consistent. They also leave the wastegate closed for as long
as possible - to give you the quickest spool up, giving you the best midrange
possible.

The fuzzy logic ones work well when you have a smooth boost curve ( so it can
learn and anticipate ) and if overshoot is a problem. It can then anticipate to
open the wastegate early. Not to sure what "learning" would do for you
otherwise. But I've heard that the EVC IV does increase spool up and the EVC IV
ad quotes " the EVC IV has the ability to learn your vehicles boost curve to
reduce as much turbo lag as possible w/o overshooting". I just don't understand
what learning would do for you if want to keep the wastegate closed as long as
possible ( seems binary to me ) and overshoot is not a problem.

Fuzzy logic models have a bimodel following - some people love them, others hate
them!

Dual vs Single Solenoid. Dual - gives you a wider range to vary boost settings.

The idea of a boost controller appeals to me - because I like the idea of
optimizing spool up ( read as quick as possible ) and being able to set a couple
of boost settings easily.

If anyone has experiences with any of the above models or sees flaws in my
assessments and have the time to respond, I would appreciate it.

Ciao!
