I have just had my last software development contract end (last week),
and am in need of some form of project to work on to hone my skills
(want to play with new technologies). No idea if any of you have any
ideas, but if you don't ask you never find out.
And a pre-Merry Christmas to you all... my miata is parked for the
winter, but I hope those of you in warmer lands are enjoying yours
fully!

Cheers,

Bah. Who needs warm lands? If you fiddle with your link settings
enough so you can start your car, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor
and the benefits of colder, denser air producing more power and faster
spool :-)

I'll tell you what I need. I'm not sure if there is something out there that
will do this or not. Say I have person A, B, and C each living in a
different part of the US. I want to input their Zipcodes in a database and
then type a zipcode for location D and have the program tell me who is the
closest. Any idea on how to do this?

Here's your project. Make a box with its own obdii port as a stand-alone
obdii replicator for people with replacement ecus that have to go through
obdii test.

I find your idea intriguing. So how smart would the box have to be to
avoid obvious detection?
It would at least need throttle position and RPM as inputs.

I'd buy one of those right about now. While my 96 Miata with Link has never
had a problem with tail pipe emissions, this year some idiot decided it was
also necessary to tap into the OBDII port. Needless to say, mine is brain
dead. Working to get collectors plates right now, but don't know if I can
pull it off. The idea of putting my car back to stock to pass emissions is
downright scary, not to mention a big waste of time.....lets see, where did
I put those injectors, and how gunked up are they....where do these wires
hook up to....getting an heartache just thinking about it.

I'd be willing to bet they don't even look for real time data. Just if it
communicates and if there are any codes set or erased within the last few
hours of operation.

Here in California, on my 99, they checked the EGR status and base timing
through the OBD-2 interface.

You couldn't make them fast enough. Since TN instituted the OBDII test,
I'd conservatively estimate that I've talked to 50 people that would
like a way around it.

All it would have to do would return the appropriate "It's all good!" to an
OBD-II query. No real-time, no logging, nothing that fancy. Find out what
the protocol for the handshake is and what the scanners are looking for -
easy enough to figure out if you have an OBD-II scanner and a car with
working OBD-II handy, really.

It can be done, either moving the pickup or a custom wheel like we use, but
I don't see how the tester could tell, unless it was smart enough to compare
crank and cam sensors somehow. I don't think so.

The crank sensor is used as the timing reference on the M1 OBDIIs. Maybe
the machine software uses the same printout form for M1 and M2.

I've been slowly putting together the stuff necessary for such a project.
Mine wasn't quite that simple- I was hoping to tap off the Link's output
port and put it into a laptop running Linux in the trunk- this would
provide for some logging capability too (like logging *everything* over
hours), that would wirelessly download the data to my home server once I
parked. The OBD-II port would be an added benefit, since we're going to
be getting emissions testing in Austin sometime in '05 or early '06.
There are lots of references for how to *READ* OBD-II, but little on
generating it. There are some SAE documents the regulations reference,
but so far I haven't taken the effort to buy them.

Hey this idea sounds familiar! Especially the "off road use only" bit :)

You couldn't make them fast enough. Since TN instituted the OBDII test, I'd
conservatively estimate that I've talked to 50 people that would like a way
around it.

I'll tell you what I need. I'm not sure if there is something out there
that
will do this or not. Say I have person A, B, and C each living in a
different part of the US. I want to input their Zipcodes in a database and
then type a zipcode for location D and have the program tell me who is the
closest. Any idea on how to do this?

Try the engineering library at a university. Take a good camera or lots of
coin for the copy machine.
