Do you guys have any tips on assembling hose ends with stainless braided
hose? I've just about torn up a -6 fitting trying to get it on the hose.
Aeroquip's instructions say to cut the hose with a hacksaw or chop saw using
masking tape to keep the end from flaring. I'm using masking tape, and I
tried both the hacksaw (32 TPI) and a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder. The
angle grinder produced the best cut, although it was still a little flared
at the end. Now Aeroquip's instructions say to remove the tape and insert
the hose into the fitting. Ha! Easier said than done. When I do it this
way, the stainless braid just starts to flare and come unraveled.
Frustrating to say the least. I tried leaving the tape on, and it does the
same thing, although not as bad.

I'm using Aeroquip fittings and Aeroquip hose. What am I doing wrong?
Should I lubricate the hose and the fitting on this step?

The stainless braid has just about worn off the anodized finish on the
inside of this -6 fitting that I have. I suppose I don't understand how
that hose fits into such a small orifice in the fitting!! Yes, I'm sure
it's a -6 fitting. :)

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Billy

Billy, when I did mine it didn't make a bit of sense and didn't look like i=
t was going to work, but I ended up following the directions to the letter =
- v e r y c a r e f u l l y - and in the end, it worked out just fine. Min=
d you, this was after more than a few runs at it doing it my way, because o=
f course, I knew better. I can't think of anything else to suggest, other t=
han I know the cutting of the hose was pretty critical - it needs to be as =
neat as you can get it - and I think I may have ended up using some oil as =
a lubricant to help persuade the hose into the fitting. Also - I didn't try=
this, but it occurred to me later - clamping the end of the cut braid with=
a small hose clamp might make it easier to work the hose into the fitting,=
sort of like a piston ring clamp. Good luck.

Here=B9s the instructions I use, maybe its the same as you have, I don=B9t =
know:
bakerprecision.com/aqp12a.htm

After cutting the hose, the socket will capture the stainless braid (step
2). The way I do it: after cutting, I remove the the last 1/8=B2 or so of t=
he
tape, leaving some of the tape still on the hose, then slide the hose onto
the socket until the end of the braid is captured by the socket (the 1/8=B2=
or
so I uncovered), then I remove the rest of the tape, then finish sliding it
onto the socket. Or you could try Mel=B9s suggestion and use a small hose
clamp to provide the same function as the tape, you would just sort of slide
the clamp back as the hose goes into the socket, I bet that would also work.
The most important thing for a good assembly is to make sure you get the
hose all the way into the socket, and make sure it stays all the way in the
socket when you screw on the nipple.
