(NPC)adjust timing on 99?

Just got thru reading Norm's book on Miata performance and
want to adjust my timing to 14ºBTC.
Just one little problems, no make that 2 little problems.
#1 the back of one of the cam shafts. He even has a
picture, but I can't see anything that looks like that. My
coil pack is bolted to (?) the cam cover where I thought the
sensor would be. Is it different on the 99s?
#2 where can I power my timing light. He mentions a plug on
the M1 Miatas that is behind the pop up headlights, I don't
have anything like that. Anyone with a 99 tell me where
they get their power?
Napa says they do not have a #42 thermostat as is called for
in Norm's book. I have found a 180º thermostat at
Greenlight. anyone have any better suggestions? I am
presuming the lower temp thermostat at NAPA is a 180º,
could it be a 160º?

Keep in mind that continuous street use of a low-temp thermostat can
prevent carbon from being burned out of the combustion chambers. It's a
common cause of pre-ignition.

Good point... I have a big problem keeping my foot out of it, so I doubt I
will have any problems with the Tstat, but I left mine stock anyway... The
FM radiator seems to be more than adequate.

Good point... I have a big problem keeping my foot out of it, so I doubt I

Because the 99 has a knock sensor are you saying that it will advance until
it encounters knock?
Why does the sticker under my hood say to set the timing to 10º if there is
no way to set it?
I'm soooo confused!

No, it doesn't advance until knock. The sticker is for use by smog
inspection folks as the spec to verify in case their equipment doesn't have
up-to-date tables.

You can't adjust the timing on the '99 without building a bracket for the
crank sensor. As far as the thermostat, don't bother. The radiator is small
enough that the car will never run at the lower temp anyway, except on cold
days, when you'll be pissed that your heat isn't. JMHO.
