Gotta beg to differ. I can't fathom taking something as cool as a classic
car and sticking it in a barn where very few people see it and NOBODY
enjoys it for what it was intended, to be DRIVEN. I CAN see the point on a
4 million dollar car, but I gotta question the sanity of someone paying
that much for one to begin with.
I tend to think art is created to be looked at, but cars are created to be
experienced.. which means driving them. If you only look at it, you are
missing half the story.
I would rather have a fake "collector car" than a real one anyhow.. Gimme a
cloned 68 Shelby GT500KR Convertible since I can't afford the $90K pricetag
anyhow, plus I can rag on it and not worry that I'm basically throwing away
thousands of dollars. ;) That and let's face it, the 68 Mustang really
needs some of today's technology to be a fun car.. some suspension work for
sure. :)

Believe it or not, I think we are pretty much on the same page.=20
I think cars should be experienced as well, however when there are only
5 of them left in the world I think you owe it to the rest of mankind to
park it.=20
I don't consider a 68 mustang to be a candidate for preservation. There
are enough of them around and they have a purist following as well. In
this case I say molest the car and see how far you can go with it.=20
If it were a 1926 Mercedes Benz 630K, I'd hope you had the sense to park
it or at least reserve it for driving once a year.=20
I absolutely agree that cars should be driven. That is where the passion
lies for most people. My point is simply that there are exceptions and
he has a whole warehouse full of them.=20

I think the Jay Leno approach is good.. own a lot, but drive them all once
in a while. :) I read an article once on him and how he was driving this
steam powered car of his like a madman, and it was all of 30 mph or so...

Believe it or not, I think we are pretty much on the same page.
I think cars should be experienced as well, however when there are only
5 of them left in the world I think you owe it to the rest of mankind to
park it.
I don't consider a 68 mustang to be a candidate for preservation. There
are enough of them around and they have a purist following as well. In
this case I say molest the car and see how far you can go with it.
If it were a 1926 Mercedes Benz 630K, I'd hope you had the sense to park
it or at least reserve it for driving once a year.
I absolutely agree that cars should be driven. That is where the passion
lies for most people. My point is simply that there are exceptions and
he has a whole warehouse full of them.

Gotta beg to differ. I can't fathom taking something as cool as a
classic
car and sticking it in a barn where very few people see it and NOBODY
enjoys it for what it was intended, to be DRIVEN. I CAN see the point
on a
4 million dollar car, but I gotta question the sanity of someone paying
that much for one to begin with.
I tend to think art is created to be looked at, but cars are created to
be
experienced.. which means driving them. If you only look at it, you are
missing half the story.
I would rather have a fake "collector car" than a real one anyhow..
Gimme a
cloned 68 Shelby GT500KR Convertible since I can't afford the $90K
pricetag
anyhow, plus I can rag on it and not worry that I'm basically throwing
away
thousands of dollars. ;) That and let's face it, the 68 Mustang really
needs some of today's technology to be a fun car.. some suspension work
for
sure. :)

I doubt it. Most collectors see them as an investment and don't want to
take any chances. The only reason I would pay 4 million for a car is to
one day sell it for more. It would never see pavement either.
Think about it if every collector drove his/her cars we would probably
not have some of the specimens we have today.
I'm all for people who don't drive them. I like to think they are being
preserved.

That's *exactly* why I love Miatae so much -- I'd rather have a $20k car
that I can afford to drive the hell out of, shoe with racing tires, and
modify to my heart's delight than a $70k car that I dare not touch for fear
of "resale value". I have a friend with a neat Z06. He'll never autocross
it, take to a drag strip, or enjoy a track day with it, as racing tires &
rims are gonna cost $3k+, and god forbid he puts it into a wall.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a Ferrari. I'd park it in my living
room and admire it all day long...

Speeking of "using' expensive cars check out the first vid in this link of
a Lambo Gallardo at a track day at Brainerd Intl. Tha camera car is a
friend with a track dedicated 3rd Gen RX7 that is a real rocket. The
"traffic in the way" white Miata is me. Some of his other vids are cool as
well. The ZO6 shown is supercharged.

I'm more for the cars to be enjoyed. There are things that should be
relished and old cars are one of those things. They might as well be
in old barns collecting dust and rusting aways otherwise. or post a
picture and save the space ;-)
But thats just my opinion.... its their cars....
