Hi Ralph,
Here is some design formulas for a tube opening to help get you started.
This is from Dr. Gordon Blair from 1964.
If the dia. of the tube is D the total opening is 3/2 x D. The radius of the
lip is D/4.
This can't be used with any thing streched over the top of the opening. Look
at a new M5. If the top of the manifold plenum is removed each clyinder has
a tube that seems to follow the tuning formula (or something close) that I
proposed a few days ago. That formula was also from Dr. Blairs work.
This is from Larry Widmer and is more recent.
He says to draw an arc that is equal to the radius of the tube. This will
make a half donut that will fit around the tube. If this were a drawing of a
side view, the arc would start at the tip of the tube and continue outwards
half way to a circle.
A guy has to start some where. I know these aren't too good of explanations
but i can't seem to get them any better. If I can help just ask.
Tom

Food for thought on that electric SC:
Talking to my friend who has a flow bench he says that sometimes adding a
different shape inlet (velocity stack) to the intake can result in more
power. Sometimes it hurts power.
I'm thinking about playing with different inlet shapes and then just
covering them with air filter foam. Like a velocity stack but filtered
too. If the flow bench likes it then /maybe/ there is 5 hp to be had
there.
Tom is urging me to get an extra throttle body to modify because he knows
there is more hp to be had there. Even with a turbo. He's not talking
about boring it out either.
Listening to Tom it sounds like throttle body polishing is money
well spent. A guy at work had his NA improved touring Rabbit TB polished
and he says it made noticably more power. Mostly at higher rpms.
