Ask for IDS connectors and ribbon cable (make your own). I doubt that
you'll find them pre-assembled.

I found this from the web site...
store.yahoo.com/webtronics/20pinflatrib1.html
Does it look like a right cable? $10 for a cable! But it's 2 meters long.
Is 20 pins right? I don't have my car with me, so I can't check.

It's a 14-pin cable. This is an odd size and it's very unlikely you'll find
these pre-made. The cable and the terminals are available from electronics
suppliers. You may be able to find the components in stock somewhere, but I
had to order the terminals from a local electronics source.

Really, I don't have plans to be able to use the keypad from within my
house! The cable that came with my Mk2 ECU is just barely long enough
to reach from the ECU to where the keypad is velcro'ed on the flat
shelf above the center A/C vents. I would like to route it a little
better, requiring a longer cable run. I'd like to know if the max
recommended length is on the order of the 3 feet of my current cable,
or is it more like 10 feet or more, in which case I have nothing to
worry about.

My cable is six feet, no problem whatsoever (been that way for a year and a
half). Ten feet should be fine, but remember - it's a Miata. A ten foot
ribbon cable would let you mount the keypad on the front bumper.

You can buy a ribbon cable with any number of pins (14 or more, that is) and
just strip off the ones you don't need. That's what I did, and it worked
well. The connectors can be reused, just be very careful about taking them
apart.

Actually, it's part of Mel's "Great Seat Experiment 2001" where he mounts his
seat (or what's left of it these days) in the trunk in an effort to increase
leg room (and to give him that rakish "slingshot dragster" look...)
Go Big Daddy!

But won't that throw off the Miata's near perfect 50/50 front-rear weight
distribution?

Can't you just loosen the connectors and re-use them on the new cable?

Next up - a fully reclined driving position (yes, from the trunk). There
will be a driver flotation system (waterbed), I'll be removing the
windshield structure and permanently sealing over the cockpit. Navigation
will be by remote video camera. Gonna change the name to the "Greased
Licorice Bonbon".

Probably not. As careful as I was when trying this (hey - I design and build
surgical instruments), the ears on the ends of the terminals still broke
off. They're not designed to be reused, and the trouble you'd have to go
through is definitely NOT worth it (very carefully regulated heat to soften
the plastic). They're cheap and easy enough to find (just don't bother with
Radio Schlock - well, for anything, for that matter). Probably easy enough
to source on the web, and you could have them delivered tomorrow.
