I would agree here, it is much more your shifting empathy then anything. Hard slaming of gears etc is more likely the culprit. I'm laying down 400hp and the tires let loose at about 2k rpm, I've taken it to the drag and burnt the clutch, because I don't just drop the clutch in! I'd rather replace a clutch then a tranny! I'm still on a stock 10AE 6 spd.

Still, I have a hard time with 1.2" of tire being the difference between

You're not the only one with big power that's running the 6spd with
"success". How long since you installed it?

Its been about hmm over a year or so, she doesn't get alot of mileage, but I do baby it when I launch. I'm also on Sumitomo HTRZ II's 215's to put it in context.

Speaking of contact patch size and the fact that some people think it
remains the same size, but just changes shape as you go to wider
tires...
I wonder if this is actually true. I'm thinking that this would be
true given the perfect tire on the perfect surface: Like a huge Mylar
tire on a smooth steel surface. But we have varying sidewall heights
and stiffness and thick rubber skins. I'm thinking that it may not be
a pure straight line function.
I'd love to see some tests: put fresh paint on different width tires
at the same pressure and measure the area of the shape they create
when mounted on the same weight vehicle.

I think (and here we enter a dark, unknown territory...) that within a
certain range of tires, in other words, tires that would work for a given
application and at a given range of air pressures, the contact area is going
to be very close, probably within a range that would render the differences
moot. Changing air pressure would probably result in a small change of
contact area, but there is a narrow range of pressures that works for any
given tire, vehicle and driving situation, so we're limited there. Of
course, if you were so inclined and mounted a bicycle tire on your car,
there's no way the area of the contact patch would match that of a car tire,
but you would either need several hundred pounds of pressure or you would be
riding on the rims and all the other drivers would laugh at you.

All the other drivers laugh at me anyways. What can you do?
But: I think it's more the deforming characteristics at different
pressures - the rate at which the tire heats up and the rate at which is
cools and the deformation of the contract patch under different loads.
I don't think anyone here would argue that proper tire pressure for an event
is critical. Also, changing design of tire is going to make a big
difference (I'm starting from scratch with my T1-S verses my T1-R), and this
is a much bigger effect than the size of the tire.
My advice: Go to a bigger tire for looks, but for all other reasons size is
less of a factor. Dear-old-dad's drag car has HUGE tires for the street,
and much smaller ones for racing - and they work a lot better.

Chris,
Have you seen this thread over on the V8 forum? Lots of deliberations of
weight/size/traction.
forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=173999
I ended up ordering 15x7" 41et offset Enkei RPF1's for the weight savings
and 225/50-15 Toyo T1R's. Total weight per corner should be less than 30 #.

ok well i just traded the 05 wheels for these 04 wheels which i really like,
although i'd like it if they stuck out more (less offset). anyway, i just
want maybe 3/4" or so more diameter and as much additional width as these
rims can properly handle. i was hoping to find someone who already went
through this, but i have yet to check mazda-speed site which i will. thanks
for the replies!
hey what does FM's car use for wheels and offset with those 245's or
whatever?

RE: 1. New Wheels with different offset.
2. LOUDER on braking? Brakes! Wheel bearings don't get louder
under braking.
3. You say that you want to go from 205 to 225. you may be making
the tire too tall if you don't go to a lower aspect ratio. Suggest you
compare the sizes using Tirerack's spec page. It shows width, height,
aspect ratio, turning radius, weight, etc.... Doesn't matter that Tirerack
doesn't sell Toyo or whatever brand you want, the turning radius/aspect
ratio would be similar, not exact but similar.
Whatever you decide, whether different wheels, different tires, or
both, you're gonna be spending money, so research it first and you'll feel
better about having spent the bucks.
Good luck, and think about offering your stock wheels and/or tires for sale;
that could offset the cost somewhat.

Wow? 225 on 7" rims? I have Kosie K1-TS I think it is, very light weight,=

At $60 a tire I can smoke them all day long, if my wussy 4 banger is up to=

I wouldn't smoke tires, Abe. It's bad for you and the pipe you'd need would
be very heavy.

shows width, height, aspect ratio, turning radius, weight, etc....
Doesn't matter that Tirerack doesn't sell Toyo or whatever brand you
want, the turning radius/aspect ratio would be similar, not exact but
similar.
Whatever you decide, whether different wheels,
different tires, or both, you're gonna be spending money, so research it
first and you'll feel better about having spent the bucks.=20=20
Good luck, and think about offering your stock wheels
and/or tires for sale; that could offset the cost somewhat.

Okay, now that we're getting a new OTM in the house I might get my Speed ba=
ck from Janice to drive. Since she has bent at least 2 wheels on the base =
going to work I will have to be replacing the wheels too.
I was thinking 15" or 16" with the most rubber I can fit.
Bill, I thought you were using 16x7 with Kumho MX tires. I don't see those=
tires in that size. What exactly is it you are running on the Speed. Whe=
el size and offset and tire size and brand please??? Any rubbing issues th=
at would stop me from using the same size on a street driver??
thanks

We were limited to tires available from Tire Rack. I don't know if the
S-03 would be our first choice, but 245/45-16 is a hard size to find. We
could have used 245/40-17 but that would have required 8" wide wheels.
Not in the budget.
The sidewall stiffness of the S-03 and Azenis will certainly help fight
wallowing. Can't say the same about the T1-R.

also psst
you can get a Toyo T1R in a 235/35-16. That's pretty darn close to
stock diameter!
ec-securehost.com/OnlineTires.com/Toyo_PROXES_T1-R.html
I wonder if the 35 series sidewall reduces the wallowy feel compared to
the SO3 or Azenis...

We were limited to tires available from Tire Rack. I don't know if the
S-03 would be our first choice, but 245/45-16 is a hard size to find. We
could have used 245/40-17 but that would have required 8" wide wheels.
Not in the budget.
The sidewall stiffness of the S-03 and Azenis will certainly help fight
wallowing. Can't say the same about the T1-R.

you can get a Toyo T1R in a 235/35-16. That's pretty darn close to
stock diameter!

I wonder if the 35 series sidewall reduces the wallowy feel compared to
the SO3 or Azenis...

Well if you were limited in 245 choices why didn't you look at the real
size of the tire and not the rated size. Real tire sizes can vary
significantly from their rated sizes.
Your favorite tire doesn't have a Tread width? The tire companies that
don't publish tread widths typically are undersized for their rated
sizes. This isn't such an issue in the smaller Miata tire sizes but
can become an issue at 205-225 and definitely is an issue in 245s.
I haven't done the research for this size but this might have opened up
a few doors. I found that on my 18" rims (on another car) actual sizes
varied by almost 2". I ended up with BMW spec tires on the front and
Porsche spec tires on the rear.
Goodyear and Michelin tend to be narrow for their rated sizes.
Bridgestone makes a lot of special sizes for OEM so many times if you
get one of those it is much wider than rated. I can send you a pdf of
the S02s that shows this very clearly.
Another issue is that the S03 is a very heavy tire.

Give me a little credit. I did look at real sizes. Tire Rack lists them
for every tire they sell, by the way, and tire manufacturers usually
provide them on their own websites. That's how we chose what we ran. I
have a spreadsheet that shows not only rated sizes, but also all the
other dimensions of all other tires being considered.=20
The S03 is heavy, yes. But given the constraints placed upon us, it
worked out as the best choice for that car. Since you do not operate
under these same constraints, feel free to select a different solution
for your own car.=20

Well, I wasn't sure. Most people are surprised that actual tire sizes
vary.

Yes, it is amazing what kind of work it takes to get the right
size/type tire anymore. Oh, wait, that's a plus because now we truly
can match tires to our needs. Unfortunately a lot of the major brands
don't give real sizes on their websites. Goodyear doesn't/didn't for
their F1 and the Goodyear store near me had to find a set in stock and
manually measure them. Surprise! Surprise! They are one of the brands
that undersizes their tires.

I wasn't criticizing, just trying to make sure you were aware of
options. Like I said, most people aren't and simply look for a certain
rated size never knowing that some major brand tires are WAY
undersized!
BFG KDs are undersized in some sizes. On my S2000 I found out the hard
way that the 245 x 16 rear tire is almost a full inch narrower than a
225 x 16 OEM S02. The 225 KD was almost exactly the same size as the
OEM 205 fronts. Not knowing this I bought the next size up thinking I
was getting wider tires but instead I just bought myself terminal
oversteer. It was a great tire but the sizing just threw the stagger
way off. Had I put them on the Miata, since all 4 corners would have
been the same size, they would have been fabulous tires.
Wasting $$$ is the easiest way to teach me a lesson!
