I received the following email on the Ford Miata V6 conversion article I
wrote last year that was posted to a couple of Web sites. I am forwarding
it, with permission, because several members of this list are, or are
considering, doing engine swaps and you might want to consider something
other than a Ford 302.

Subject: aftermarket is not a downside to v6 miata
Hello, I stumbled upon miata.net while looking for info on modding my
girlfriends newly aquired 2002 miata. I read the article about the V6
powered miata. You had said that the only downside to using the 3.0 duratech
would be that it has no after market. Well I'm emailing you to tell you it
does. To start here are some links
www.fastcougar.com
www.fordcontour.org
www.contour.org
www.duratechperformance.com
geocities.com/bnoon50311/3literhome.htm
These are links to forums that contain all the information you probably need
on the duratech 3.0 and 2.5 ( 2.5 is a de-stroked version of the 3.0). Terry
Haines one of the designers of the duratec frequents the CEG board so direct
questions at him.
www.customcougars.com
www.shoshop.com
These are only two shops that sell parts for the 3.0 and 2.5 duratech.
There are also up and comming shops as well.
The 2.5l and 3.0l duratec are used in Ford tarus, contour, mondeo, jaguar
type x, ls, mystique and cougar
To give you an idea of the aftermarket for this engine here is a basic list
of aftermarket parts available for the 3.0 and 2.5 duratec.
Intakes, Cold Air boxes, ram air kits, Tbs, MAFs, headers, ecu, tuning chips
(both diablo sport and super chip), vortech super charger to name but a few.
In the works right now are a turbo and forged internals. The turbo charger
is in the alpha stage (projected price of $4,500). The forged internals are
a go but the suppler is trying to find a lower price (right now bearings,
rods, wrist pins, piston rings come to $1,500)
On top of the after market duratec owners also have the option to use
components out of the SVT contour and mustang cobra.
To give you an idea of the potential for this motor here are some numbers
people are pulling.
People with 3.0ls with your standard bolt on mods are pulling between
200-250 hp at the crank. People running svt parts as well as your standard
bolt on mods are pulling between 249-279hp at the crank. There is one guy
running a s/c 3.0l pulling 310hp at the crank. Another guy with full pnp job
and custom intake is pulling 295 at the wheels. The 2.5l runs slightly lower
numbers.....basicly remove 40hp from any 3.0 and that's what a 2.5 will
pull. The turbo is expected to put 300hp to the wheels and that's with a 20%
loss through our transmission.
Our aftermarket is no where near the size of many other cars, but we have a
good solid base and it is growing. I'm very much intrested in this mod for
the miata and hope that many miata owners will go this route. We've built a
decent base after market for this engine hopefuly enough for miata owners to
look in this direction as the choice v6 swap. If this proves to be so then
our after market will grow by leaps and bounds. I was hoping you could post
this information in your v6 miata article or in the news somewhere on
miata.net to let miata owners know there is indeed an aftermarket for the
duratec.
Intresting side notes: The FE3's that people are dropping into their miatas
are also being dropped into first generation ford probes (89-93). This was
actually my first tuner car. In my garage right now I have a FE3 first gen
probe with an rx-7 hybrid turbo.
If you need any help sourcing info or have any questions about the duratec
and it's aftermarket let me know I'm more than willing to help out.
Now that I know this is a possible mod for the miata my girlfriend and I
might just have his and hers 300+ hp duratecs
I hope miata, cougar, contour, jaguar, tarus owners can meet on this common
ground.

Kind of sad, all that displacement and no more power than an run of the mill
FM II. :( Different torque curve though. :) Still no solution to the
breaking of other things at 260-300+ rwhp though.
Thanks for sharing the info Richard & Rocco,
Eric
