Noone answered part of my origial question, so I'll restate, in case it got=
overlooked...
The measurements I took (if I used my tools properly) suggest that the bore=
is out of spec by as much as .0035in.
If .0035 was worn from the bore, why would I still be able to see the hone =
marks?
I am using a telescoping bore gauge and a dial caliper to measure.
What method do you engine builders use to use the bore gauge?
I suspect I'm doing it wrong.

Use a use a micrometer in conjunction with the bore gauge not calipers for
better accuracy - 3.5 thou off and you'd see shiny polished cylinders, not
hone. Are you 0.0035 off of the piston or the bore spec? You may just be
measuring the clearance..
If you look around, you can find a true bore gauge for <$100. search for
starrett, fowler, or mitutoyo on ebay. Makes checking for taper and
out-of-round much quicker.

I beasured the actual bore.
The hone marks are kinda hard to see, but they are there, and they are pres=
ent all the way around and all the way down all 4 cylinders.
Any idea what I'lll have to pay for a mic? Any idea where I can get one th=
at is good enough for the job, but inexpensive?
Thanks,
Chad

Since my "car budget" is kinda weak these days, the prices for a dedicated
bore gauge were a bit higher than the budget will allow right now.
=09
I did, however, find a 3-4" micrometer for cheap. I'll just have to
practice using the telescoping bore gauges. It seems that if you tilt the
gauge "just so" after setting it, it comes out without touching the sides.
=09
Once I get this new mic, I will practice getting identical measurements.
Once I feel confident, I will remeasure to see if the bores are right.
=09
When I saw the numbers I knew something had to be wrong, since I was able
to see the hone marks in the cylinders..I KNEW the bores couldn't be worn
by .0035....I don't know what the actual measurement is for the hone marks,
but I suspect that they're a whole lot shallower than .0035....maybe .001
at the deepest.
=09
So, I'll measure again..
=09
Thanks for the input. I'm sure I'll be back to pick your brains
again.........

Why not stop by an automotive machine shop with the block?
You could see how they check the block and get professional recommendations.
I know you want to do this stuff yourself, but for a few bucks you can get
the correct answers and an education at the same time.
At the least, the block is going to have to be cleaned and honed, deck
checked etc.
Unless you will be doing a lot of this, the investment in tools, etc., is
probably not worth it.
Every machine shop I've ever used love to talk about, and explain what they
do.

Chad,
It depends on how the bore was honed and how you are measuring. I don't
recall the history of your block but... When you install and torque the head
bolts (either with the head or with a plate) it will deform the block,
especially in the areas around the head bolts.
You will see oddities like this if it was honed previously with the bolts
installed and torqued and you are currently measuring without them...or
vice-versa - you have a plate installed and they were honed without.

Noone answered part of my origial question, so I'll restate, in case it got
overlooked...
The measurements I took (if I used my tools properly) suggest that the bore
is out of spec by as much as .0035in.
If .0035 was worn from the bore, why would I still be able to see the hone
marks?
I am using a telescoping bore gauge and a dial caliper to measure.
What method do you engine builders use to use the bore gauge?
I suspect I'm doing it wrong.

No, we've never done a stock bore rebuild, so I don't have any reason to
measure before they go to the shop. Rationale is if you're going in there,
may as well make some extra power. Even if your bore is in decent shape, it
should still be honed to get a good seal with the new rings, and if you hone
it, then you probably will end up at or beyond the wear limit. YBSMV

So, you take all blocks to the machine shop to be measured? I thought you
guys did in-house measurements to see if a rebore was required......
Doesn't that mean that your engine builds take considerably longer since you
have to send the block out to get it checked before you can even begin?
OK - I'f I'm gonna send this to a shop to be measured, what can I expect to
pay for these services?

So, you take all blocks to the machine shop to be measured? I thought you
guys did in-house measurements to see if a rebore was required......
Doesn't that mean that your engine builds take considerably longer since you
have to send the block out to get it checked before you can even begin?
OK - I'f I'm gonna send this to a shop to be measured, what can I expect to
pay for these services?

Why not stop by an automotive machine shop with the block?
You could see how they check the block and get professional
recommendations.
I know you want to do this stuff yourself, but for a few bucks you
can get
the correct answers and an education at the same time.
At the least, the block is going to have to be cleaned and honed,
deck
checked etc.
Unless you will be doing a lot of this, the investment in tools,
etc., is
probably not worth it.
Every machine shop I've ever used love to talk about, and explain
what they
do.
<< Since my "car budget" is kinda weak these days, the prices for a
dedicated
bore gauge were a bit higher than the budget will allow right now.
I did, however, find a 3-4" micrometer for cheap. I'll just have
to
practice using the telescoping bore gauges. It seems that if you
tilt the
gauge "just so" after setting it, it comes out without touching the
sides.
Once I get this new mic, I will practice getting identical
measurements.
Once I feel confident, I will remeasure to see if the bores are
right.
When I saw the numbers I knew something had to be wrong, since I
was able
to
see the hone marks in the cylinders..I KNEW the bores couldn't be
worn by
.0035....I don't know what the actual measurement is for the hone
marks, but
I suspect that they're a whole lot shallower than .0035....maybe
.001 at the
deepest.
So, I'll measure again..
Thanks for the input. I'm sure I'll be back to pick your brains
again.........

Why not take the block to a auto machine shop that specializes in just such
work? If it needs bored, and you use them, they probably won't even charge
for the measuring. It all is OK as-is you pay a small fee and rest
comfortably knowing all is well.
Or, why not just overbore it and forget measuring it altogether...and put in
a stroker crank while you're at it...
