MK2 A/F readings, Lambda sensor problem??

Hello people,
I am looking for advice concerning the a/f readout on my 10th AE FM2.
I am using a seperate J&S a/f monitor that I still had from when I was
running my '91 with Sebring and J&S unit.
The time that it takes before the monitor is getting a/f signal (led's on
the unit starting to flash) is getting extremely long now.
In current weather temps (about 5 C) it takes about 6-7 miles before I get a
readout on the monitor.
I am beginning to wonder if possibly the Lambda sensor's heating circuit is
defective.
I am not getting a engine check code (or doesn't this apply when the heating
circuit is defective?).
The Workshop manager at my dealer who is also a Miata enthousiast is willing
to order a new lambda sensor under warranty, but told me that according to
the Mazda importer they have never changed a defective sensor yet and I
better make sure it really is defective first, or I will have to pay (sensor
is quite expensive over here in Europe, about $150) if it turns out
afterwards that the old sensor was OK.
Do others using a/f monitors experience the same long distance in cold
weather before the a/f signal starts showing? (on my Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
VI where I also fitted a (different) a/f monitor, it takes less than 1/2
mile before the signal shows).
How do I check the lambda sensor's heating circuit??

Sounds like the heater to me. My aftermarket O2 sensor starts cycling
within about 20 or 30 seconds after I start the car. It was 300 degrees
the other morning.
As for checking it, it's a heater. Figure out which are the 2 wires and
measure it with an ohm meter.
