Since I upgraded to the FMiii air-box intake for my M2 FMii,
the check engine light keeps coming on all the time. Everything
runs just fine as far as I can tell. Should I (a) be concerned, (b) try to
find an independent shop with a code reader, (c) take it to the dealer,
(d) don't worry about it as long as engine appears to be running OK.

Prior to the new air-box the check engine seldom came on, and only on the
rarest of occasions and that was related to the O2 clamp since removed.
Now the CE light is on all the time and my anal-retentive personality will
not allow me to overlook it any longer.

Any/all suggestions appreciated. BTW, other identical cars have not had
this problem, AFAIK.

Thanks,
Jim in Tucson

Do you have the Gnd and Ten pins still bridged in the diagnostic box?
The airbox mod will have no effect on the CE light by itself.

I forgot to add, Unless you damaged the temp sensor on the M2, or left
it out when you swaped air boxes. And I'm not entirely positive if the
GND/ten pin issues would hold true for the M2.

No. I think that applies only to M1.

And, I agree FMiii air box should not make any difference.
All I know is that I had no problem with CE light for 20K
miles, changed to FMiii intake, and now CE light won't stay off.
I think I need to find a code reader, I just don't trust car dealers.

I have the FMIII intake on my 99 as well (2 injector setup), and I do =
seem to get a check engine light once in a while. It always seems to =
occur during heavy stop and go commute driving. No other symptoms, car =
runs just fine. I just pull the fuse and tap the brake pedal 3 or 4 =
times when I get home. Should I be concerned?

Not really sure, Ron. As I understand it, the CE light will come on
whenever any of several operational parameters fall outside of
established OEM ranges, or something like that (maybe someone
else can explain this better than I.)

I am not concerned as my car is running great, right now. But, if an OEM
part is failing or approaching failure I would want to know about it. I am
going to try to track down an independent shop with a code reader. If not,
I will take it to the dealer and take my chances. Whatever the results, I
will
keep you posted.
