I am tuning my new chip. Yesterday I took a road trip and decided I had
enough coarse and fine tuning, it was time for boost.
Turned the boost target up to 180kPa, but wasn't getting any boost above
the mechanical can (6psi). Started to up the WG Sense 3 points at a time.
Nothing happening, so I broke out the manual. Ah! WG Sense had started at
zero,it would take a while to get to where it mattered! Moved it up into
the 30's and now I was in business!!. At 38 points, no overshooting and a
pretty consistent boost at around 168-170kPa.
The car is pretty fast again, and after days of no boost, it is pretty
enjoyable. It's getting dark so I'm heading home on the four-lane, there
is some yahoo in front of me in the left lane puttering along....and
puttering along....and refusing to move over in the right-hand lane to let
traffic by. He is going about 55-60 in a 55, (normal traffic flow around
here is easily 10 mph above posted on freeways).
I see an opening in traffic in the right lane. I'm in 4th gear and I nail
it, whip right, glance at the speedo which is now indicating near 80, then
whip left in front of this bozo and give him my right turn signal as a
"please move over next time". I was slowing back down to around 60 when
all the blue lights and sirens went off, The cop is behind the guy. Of
course it takes him a while to get out of the cop's way, but I've already
slowed down and pulled into the right hand lane where the cop follows me to
the side of the road. I was nailed for sure, and I could already feel my
insurance premiums taking big bites out of my *** and wallet.
(I'm sure the turkey in the left lane got quite a laugh at my expense as he
went by.)
The cop asks me the following questions: "Where are you going, to the
races? Do you want to go to jail for reckless driving? Do you think
driving a performance car gives you the right to disobey traffic laws? Can
you pay more attention to what's behind you, especially if it is me in my
cop car? Can you keep it under the speed limit?" etc. etc. I know I'm
busted so I am "yes sir" and "no sir" and "thank you for the reminder sir"
and he let's me go. I couldn't believe it. Must have been a combination
of:
1. He saw I was consistently only going a few mph over, except for the one
pass.
2. He was behind the bozo too and it was PO'ing him as well.
3. My grey hair finally became an advantage.
4. He was going off shift and didn't have time to screw with writing a
ticket.
5. I passed the guy faster than he had time to radar my speed.
6. Some sort of astronomical/karma alignment of the stars, etc.
7. All of the above.
Really nice cop, as far as I'm concerned. He saw the 6pt. harnesses roll
bar and fire extinguisher, FM hood, all that, and must have had some pity
on me as an enthusiast, or something. I'm not sure, but he had me dead to
rights, so I'm going to watch my P's and Q's around town...
Getting older sucks, I can't make out cop cars by their headlights in the
rearview any more. I'm going to have to minimize the night driving under
boost.
