Hey all,
As some of you might know, I'm looking for an engine to replace Junior's quirky mill. He's a 97, but a 99-00 engine is perfectly acceptable (though I will have to figure out how to run the VICS). The problem is that most of the salvage places have engines with over 100,000mi. This really doesn't make sense for me as Junior's motor already had 126k on it. I'd considered buying an older engine and having it rebuilt, but I'm a little itchy about having it torn apart (unless you all know of someone trustworthy to put it together for me).
So far I've checked out:
car-part.com
The Parts Group
Planet Miata
Mazmart
Are there any other places I can check? I've found a few <100k motors, but they're over $1500. I don't mind spending that kind of money, but I keep hearing about people getting a 20-50k motor for less than $1000, and I'm hoping to make the same sort of purchase if it's possible.
Thank you all for your time! I'm hoping to have Junior on the road in time for Miatas at the Gap this year!

I'm having the same problem. Around here, '99-00 motors are about $1200-15=
00 and have over 100k miles at most salvage yards. They are popular with =
the spec Miata crowd, hence expensive.
NA 1.8L motors are $600-800 and tend to have around 80k miles. I'm told th=
e going rate should be more like $400 but I haven't found any.
Most of these motors do not have compression numbers.
The other options I'm considering include buying a remanufactured motor (~$=
1000), paying for a rebuild ($1200-2000), or buying one from Mazda ($2000).
Note I haven't sourced new/reman'ed motors yet but this is what I've been t=
old.

We have an 02 with mileage in the forties for $1200, IIRC. I'm not in
the office, but (email redacted) would have the details.

Bryan - the 94-95 is ideal swap. Swapping all the extra sensors from
you 97 to a 94/95 is not a problem. Thats what we did on the little
guy. The engine I put in was a 94/95. About the only thing that was
different was the crank angle plate and sensor.
The 3rd engine listed sounds like a steal. I would grab it.
You know we can do the swap in a weekend....
