Well I have some good news and some bad news. The car made some great =
power today. But the disk that I brought the dyno runs home on got corrupt=
ed somehow on just my files. It got all the other dyno runs, but everyone =
on my car got screwed. I will call the shop tomorrow and have them e-mail =
me the files. I will have them soon though...
Here is how it fared...
Best Link with EXACT SAME SETUP... 265 Uncorrected hp
Best TEC with EXACT SAME SETUP... 289 Uncorrected hp
Link Torque 216
TEC Torque 245 ( I think but I am=
not sure, but it was about 30ftlb.)
The TEC's Dyno chart was MUCH smoother than the link. The dyno operators n=
oted how much smoother my car was on the dyno. It looked like a normal dyn=
o chart, no spikes and jagged edges.. I got the A/F to about 11.5:1-12:1. =
EGT's were low and just around 1400. The Manifold did not glow as much th=
is time. Last time it glowed very brightly. This time was just around the=
collector right before redline..
Here is where the good stuff comes in. I could of made more power on that =
setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on there=
finally blew the rear oil seal. It has been going for a while. I happene=
d to have my nice big turbo sitting there. We decided to swap the turbo. =
We swapped the turbo and let it idle for about 15min to break it in a littl=
e bit. I know this was too little but I was short on time. First pull o=
n the same ignition map and 6% more fuel across the zones we ran it with th=
e Boost controller off. At 7lb of boost it made 230whp. The link had mad=
e 207 with the other turbo. This made me very happy as I had yet to turn t=
he boost up. We did a 3rd gear pull to see how A/F was. 6% was perfect. =
11.5:1 across the boosted zones. We did a 4th gear pull and pulled 301. Ad=
ded a little timing and got to 303 with no knock. 2hp was not worth 1.5* o=
f timing so I pulled it back out. We then turned the boost to about 16.5 =
(was 15 before) and got 317hp and 291 ftlb of torque uncorrected This bigge=
r turbo since much better suited to the motor made some serious mid rage po=
wer gains. In some spots close to 65ftlb of torque. It held the HP curve =
further. The HP curve kept on making power to redline, and could of made=
more power if we reved it to about 7500. We were only revving it to 7100.=
=20=20
The car is a BEAST on street now. Roll or stomp on it in first and you are=
instantly at fuel cut from wheel spin. Hit 2nd and hold on to the wheel a=
s the car is jumping across lanes. Shift to 3rd and be careful because it =
is still getting loose in the back. 5th gear on the interstate is insane. =
Get on the gas at 4000 full boost before 4150. I haven't seen where I get=
full boost at by starting at 2000rpm, but I will later.=20=20
I have a feeling that I will be breaking more than trannies soon..... Tors=
en will be toast soon.
I will post the files somewhere if someone can give me some space, once I g=
et them..
Both of the turbos today made more low end power than the Greddy :D
Danny
Ohh yea there are a few people I have to thank. My friend's Hassan, and Ar=
chie helped me out a lot today with the tuning, and telling me when enough =
is enough. Tom from www.lightningmotorsports.com was great as the dyno ope=
rator, and really helped me get the AF dialed in flat. Ric and Shiv both g=
ave me pointers on how to tune the TEC, and some enthusiam on breaking 300w=
hp..
And Thanks to everyone on the List for all the help... Lets see what this t=
hing will do at the track tomorrow night!!=20

way to go danny! cool that we now have a tec vs link test under our belts.
so the tec is a little higher and significantly smoother.... perhaps it's
logic is faster reacting in there or something.
i'm glad its not *way* out in front only because i drive a link!
please be careful with that rear, when mine went it was not pretty and
fortunately i was just off the interstate and decelerating, it was still bad
have fun with that lunatic car of yours and post some kills too!

You have to love all that time they spent developing the TEC. Just goes to=
show why so many people who race use it. That's my next thing to do with =
my car. Just need more money now.

Subject: Link VS Tec Dyno results....317hp!!!
Well I have some good news and some bad news. The car made some grea=
t power today. But the disk that I brought the dyno runs home on got corru=
pted somehow on just my files. It got all the other dyno runs, but everyon=
e on my car got screwed. I will call the shop tomorrow and have them e-mai=
l me the files. I will have them soon though...
Here is how it fared...
Best Link with EXACT SAME SETUP... 265 Uncorrected hp
Best TEC with EXACT SAME SETUP... 289 Uncorrected hp
Link Torque 216
TEC Torque 245 ( I think but I =
am not sure, but it was about 30ftlb.)
The TEC's Dyno chart was MUCH smoother than the link. The dyno operators=
noted how much smoother my car was on the dyno. It looked like a normal d=
yno chart, no spikes and jagged edges.. I got the A/F to about 11.5:1-12:1=
. EGT's were low and just around 1400. The Manifold did not glow as much =
this time. Last time it glowed very brightly. This time was just around t=
he collector right before redline..
Here is where the good stuff comes in. I could of made more power on tha=
t setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on the=
re finally blew the rear oil seal. It has been going for a while. I happe=
ned to have my nice big turbo sitting there. We decided to swap the turbo.=
We swapped the turbo and let it idle for about 15min to break it in a lit=
tle bit. I know this was too little but I was short on time. First pull=
on the same ignition map and 6% more fuel across the zones we ran it with =
the Boost controller off. At 7lb of boost it made 230whp. The link had m=
ade 207 with the other turbo. This made me very happy as I had yet to turn=
the boost up. We did a 3rd gear pull to see how A/F was. 6% was perfect.=
11.5:1 across the boosted zones. We did a 4th gear pull and pulled 301. =
Added a little timing and got to 303 with no knock. 2hp was not worth 1.5*=
of timing so I pulled it back out. We then turned the boost to about 16.5=
(was 15 before) and got 317hp and 291 ftlb of torque uncorrected This big=
ger turbo since much better suited to the motor made some serious mid rage =
power gains. In some spots close to 65ftlb of torque. It held the HP curv=
e further. The HP curve kept on making power to redline, and could of ma=
de more power if we reved it to about 7500. We were only revving it to 710=
0.=20=20
The car is a BEAST on street now. Roll or stomp on it in first and you a=
re instantly at fuel cut from wheel spin. Hit 2nd and hold on to the wheel=
as the car is jumping across lanes. Shift to 3rd and be careful because i=
t is still getting loose in the back. 5th gear on the interstate is insane=
. Get on the gas at 4000 full boost before 4150. I haven't seen where I g=
et full boost at by starting at 2000rpm, but I will later.=20=20
I have a feeling that I will be breaking more than trannies soon..... To=
rsen will be toast soon.
I will post the files somewhere if someone can give me some space, once I=
get them..
Both of the turbos today made more low end power than the Greddy :D
Danny
Ohh yea there are a few people I have to thank. My friend's Hassan, and =
Archie helped me out a lot today with the tuning, and telling me when enoug=
h is enough. Tom from www.lightningmotorsports.com was great as the dyno o=
perator, and really helped me get the AF dialed in flat. Ric and Shiv both=
gave me pointers on how to tune the TEC, and some enthusiam on breaking 30=
0whp..
And Thanks to everyone on the List for all the help... Lets see what this=
thing will do at the track tomorrow night!!=20

Same Snail that Ric Uses in his Kits. It gave up about 20ftlb of torque up
to about 3300 vs a FM II sleve bearing, after that it was all over!!

Same Snail that Ric Uses in his Kits. It gave up about 20ftlb of torque up
to about 3300 vs a FM II sleve bearing, after that it was all over!!

Now if I was in the Link camp, I know that I would be buying myself a TEC
and figuring out exactly what is different because there are only 2
things... TIMING AND FUEL. (well there are the coils too.)
The engines are exactly the same and the tests done back to back. I am
sure that the link crew can find the missing power.

Get on the gas at 4000 full boost before 4150. I haven't seen where I get

that setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on
there finally blew the rear oil seal. It has been going for a while. I
happened to have my nice big turbo sitting there. We decided to swap the
turbo. We swapped the turbo and let it idle for about 15min to break it in
a little bit. I know this was too little but I was short on time. First
pull on the same ignition map and 6% more fuel across the zones we ran it
with the Boost controller off. At 7lb of boost it made 230whp. The link
had made 207 with the other turbo. This made me very happy as I had yet to
turn the boost up. We did a 3rd gear pull to see how A/F was. 6% was
perfect. 11.5:1 across the boosted zones. We did a 4th gear pull and pulled
301. Added a little timing and got to 303 with no knock. 2hp was not worth
1.5* of timing so I pulled it back out. We then turned the boost to about
16.5 (was 15 before) and got 317hp and 291 ftlb of torque uncorrected This
bigger turbo since much better suited to the motor made some serious mid
rage power gains. In some spots close to 65ftlb of torque. It held the HP
curve further. The HP curve kept on making power to redline, and could of
made more power if we reved it to about 7500. We were only revving it to
7100.

Get on the gas at 4000 full boost before 4150. I haven't seen where I get
full boost at by starting at 2000rpm, but I will later.

I'm easily confused, I guess? Looks to me like the Link VS Tec
Dyno results were 289hp not 317hp? Am I missing something?

265 vs. 289 is the comparison of the two computers. The 317 is hp after we
swapped the turbo on the dyno.

Here is how it fared...
Best Link with EXACT SAME SETUP... 265 Uncorrected hp
Best TEC with EXACT SAME SETUP... 289 Uncorrected hp
Link Torque 216
TEC Torque 245 ( I think but I

The TEC's Dyno chart was MUCH smoother than the link. The dyno

It was confusing..
265-289 was with identical hardware. The 317 was with a different turbo.
Of course there are lots of variable when "simply" swapping ecus.
I wonder how a Link with better coils would fare? Good stuff. Thanks for
the notes Danny.

I don't believe the coils are the only difference but they did help a lot in
making the curve nice and smooth

Are you sure the coils are the only difference? I would not be surprised
if they were a significant part of the equation, but it that the
difference and if so... I would be surprised if coil packs were not in the
miata's future.

At least on the surface it seems to be a pretty fair test by someone
completely unbiased (maybe even slightly biased to the link). It was a
bigger difference than I expected.
One question, were the same plug wires used with both ECU's??? Not to
nit-pick but ignition problems can be a real bugger to track down
sometimes and I have seen something as simple as spark plug wires account
for large differences.
The most bizarre things I have seen lately have been in rotary motors,
where a set of plugs (1 heat range colder) was worth 15 HP and a header
swap from a RB Header to a custom Header was worth 30 HP (at the cost of
having to pour in 10% more fuel!!!)
As ralph stated. Excellent test and I look forward to seeing the dyno
graphs...

Actually no on the plugs on the wires and plugs. I beleive the plugs were
new but the wires came off from my integra. They are old and used for about
35k miles. That is all we could do at 11 at night.

Good numbers, Danny! If you were running the latest Link chip, then we've
still got our work cut out for us.

Subject: Link VS Tec Dyno results....317hp!!!
Well I have some good news and some bad news. The car made some great
power today. But the disk that I brought the dyno runs home on got
corrupted somehow on just my files. It got all the other dyno runs, but
everyone on my car got screwed. I will call the shop tomorrow and have them
e-mail me the files. I will have them soon though...
Here is how it fared...
Best Link with EXACT SAME SETUP... 265 Uncorrected hp
Best TEC with EXACT SAME SETUP... 289 Uncorrected hp
Link Torque 216
TEC Torque 245 ( I think but I am
not sure, but it was about 30ftlb.)
The TEC's Dyno chart was MUCH smoother than the link. The dyno operators
noted how much smoother my car was on the dyno. It looked like a normal
dyno chart, no spikes and jagged edges.. I got the A/F to about
11.5:1-12:1. EGT's were low and just around 1400. The Manifold did not
glow as much this time. Last time it glowed very brightly. This time was
just around the collector right before redline..
Here is where the good stuff comes in. I could of made more power on that
setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on there
finally blew the rear oil seal. It has been going for a while. I happened
to have my nice big turbo sitting there. We decided to swap the turbo. We
swapped the turbo and let it idle for about 15min to break it in a little
bit. I know this was too little but I was short on time. First pull on
the same ignition map and 6% more fuel across the zones we ran it with the
Boost controller off. At 7lb of boost it made 230whp. The link had made
207 with the other turbo. This made me very happy as I had yet to turn the
boost up. We did a 3rd gear pull to see how A/F was. 6% was perfect.
11.5:1 across the boosted zones. We did a 4th gear pull and pulled 301.
Added a little timing and got to 303 with no knock. 2hp was not worth 1.5*
of timing so I pulled it back out. We then turned the boost to about 16.5
(was 15 before) and got 317hp and 291 ftlb of torque uncorrected This bigger
turbo since much better suited to the motor made some serious mid rage power
gains. In some spots close to 65ftlb of torque. It held the HP curve
further. The HP curve kept on making power to redline, and could of made
more power if we reved it to about 7500. We were only revving it to 7100.
The car is a BEAST on street now. Roll or stomp on it in first and you are
instantly at fuel cut from wheel spin. Hit 2nd and hold on to the wheel as
the car is jumping across lanes. Shift to 3rd and be careful because it is
still getting loose in the back. 5th gear on the interstate is insane. Get
on the gas at 4000 full boost before 4150. I haven't seen where I get full
boost at by starting at 2000rpm, but I will later.
I have a feeling that I will be breaking more than trannies soon.....
Torsen will be toast soon.
I will post the files somewhere if someone can give me some space, once I
get them..
Both of the turbos today made more low end power than the Greddy :D

Ohh yea there are a few people I have to thank. My friend's Hassan, and
Archie helped me out a lot today with the tuning, and telling me when enough
is enough. Tom from www.lightningmotorsports.com
<lightningmotorsports.com> was great as the dyno operator, and
really helped me get the AF dialed in flat. Ric and Shiv both gave me
pointers on how to tune the TEC, and some enthusiam on breaking 300whp..
And Thanks to everyone on the List for all the help... Lets see what this
thing will do at the track tomorrow night!!

One thing I looked at when I decided to go to the TEC was adding ignition to
the link. MSD DIS box and coils, with Two step rev limiter cost over 400.
I paid less than 400 to upgrade to the TEC with the sale of the link. It is
as simple as that. It made perfect sense to me to go with a computer that
has broken 300 in the past (with no knock), on a stock motor, vs a computer
that has not. It was very simple math to me. Well it looks like my math
paid out.
Hey Scott I know that you had done the same thing, and you know why your
results were thrown out, because Shiv helped you. People on the list
automatically take whatever Shiv does with a grain of salt. It is a shame
considering what Shiv has done with the TEC. I tuned this myself with my
friends help. I could of waited till next week when I am in San Antonio to
have Ric tune my car, but then the same thing will be thrown out because it
is biased....
I am the type of person if someone tells me that something cant be done (by
me) I will try to do it.
Greddy wont make over 200hp without NOS..............Did it
Greddy wont run 12's withou NOS..............................Did it
Greddy wont make more power than Similar FM car....Did it
Link wont make over 300hp........................................Tried and
failed.
Tec wont make more power than link............................Did it
Only shiv or Ric can tune over 300 whp........................I did it.
You can ask my friends. I love to prove people wrong. Ask Jim Bobowski,
Mark Peugeot, Jess Gypin, Scott Wegner, and Ric Stevens. When I went to the
1.8 and big turbo I wanted to be the first to break 300whp with a link and a
stock motor... Well 19 dyno runs later and a total top end gain of about
5hp I gave up. I did everything. I turned the boost up, cranked the timing
up, leaned it out, richened it up, everything and it would not make more
power... It hit a damn wall......Still dont know what the hell
happened.....But it would not make more power...
First run on the TEC was 281. For the Next 6 or so runs all I did was
smooth A/F. The last 2 were playing with timing but the turbo blew... I
am wondering how big the margin would of been...

Now if I was in the Link camp, I know that I would be buying myself a TEC
and figuring out exactly what is different because there are only 2
things... TIMING AND FUEL. (well there are the coils too.)
The engines are exactly the same and the tests done back to back. I am
sure that the link crew can find the missing power.

that setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on
there finally blew the rear oil seal.

Yes, I've got a Tec, a DTA and probably getting an autronic. "Might" even
try the low end Motronic.

But if 280+hp means I'll start replacing transmissions
and torsens, I'll stay with the Link & 265hp. Still
spanks everything I've come across. (well, except that
600hp Supra ;)

Danny, would you be willing to post your Link tuning map used for the
previous dyno run along with the TEC tuning map?

Now if I was in the Link camp, I know that I would be buying myself a TEC
and figuring out exactly what is different because there are only 2
things... TIMING AND FUEL. (well there are the coils too.)
The engines are exactly the same and the tests done back to back. I am
sure that the link crew can find the missing power.

that setup (maybe broken 300, but I am not sure) but the turbo that was on
there finally blew the rear oil seal.
We were only revving it to
7100.

Somebody should ask Danny if the timing was the same for both the Link and
the TEC.
So how 'bout it Danny, was the timing the same? What about plug gap.
