Lately i have been trying to fight ping by richening up zones, pulling
timing from zones and upping the master fuel. My pinging is violent,
anywhere between 2-14 occurances in 4-6 seconds of higher gear boost.

In 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears (0-70mph), I get no pinging no matter how hard I run
the car. When i get to 4th and 5th and punch it (60-100mph), i'm getting so
much ping it scares me (100k mile engine).

My question is: Could broken engine mounts, loud exaust, or perhaps a loose
bolt somewhere be the cause of the knock sensor only picking up ping at high
speeds??

I think the next thing i'm going to try is putting in some race gas ($3.50 a
gallon ) and see if the pinging goes away. Maybe try a bottle of
octane booster?

As for my setup: FMII @15psi, 550cc, dual fuel rail feed, 90octane gas,
5200ft altitude, 9-18-01 chip.

Thanks,
James

As long as you understand what octane booster is. When a bottle claims to
raise your octane rating by "5 points" they are referring to 1/10 (or 0.1)
as a single "point". It would change your octane rating from 92 to 92.5.

FWIW...

Don't waste your money on pre-packaged octane booster. The only stuff known
to work is toluene (and close relatives), about 1 gal for each 5-10 gal of
gasoline. Do you hear actual pinging or do you just see noises recorded
from the knock sensor? Could simply be a bad motor mount or other
mechanical things clunking together.

I just see the readings recorded. I know what ping sounds like but i don't
hear it. But... my turbo is so loud that i don't think i would hear it
(inside the car or from another vehicle). I've heard about Mazdaspeed motor
mounts. Where is the cheapest place to pick up a set??

Thanks,
James

James,

Are you seeing the knocks when you go up from 2500rpm to high rpm in
4th or 5th gear?

If you are only seeing the knock when you punch it from 4k~5k rpm
then you may want to re-tune your fuel and timing for that path.

When you tune your timing and fuel on a normal rise path (such as
zone path 330,435,440,445,545,...), that path is very different from
a "punch" path which may be something like (340,440,540,545...).

The timing and fuel change going from 445 to 545 may be drastically
different than going from 440 to 540 to 545. Different enough to
cause knocks.
