It's winter. Nobody is doing anything with their cars and apparently
they don't do anything at work either, so they have to jabber about
something. Besides, I'd like to think of it as the FedEx power list :-)

Hey I sent the original post and the updates when I WASN'T at work.
As to whining about not getting something quick enough, well YEAH!
...But you have to recognize a problem (Ahem!) an OPPORTUNITY before
you can exploit it. I think package carriers should exploit the 'upgrade
during shipping'
Opportunity. That's the whole of it.
I bought the wheels for a very good price off Ebay. Shipping was included.
When I received the FedEx tracking number, I thought "Wow! They'll be here
in a day or two!"
Obviously, the seller utilized the least expensive shipping option he could
find.
I don't usually associate FedEx with slow.
When I saw the scheduled arrival date I phone FedEx to try to expedite
delivery, but they wouldn't do that.
Now, take a look at the current tracking info below: My wheels sat in Salem
for hours,
yet FedEx refused to allow an upgrade in shipping. Well, somehow I DON'T
think the packages
were stuck in the back of a loaded truck for that long. They had 3 hours at
Salem, and then 11 hours at Portland.
My guess is a little truck took the packages from Salem to Portland, where
they were loaded into a big trailer.
Two missed opportunities to upgrade shipping. See? It could be done. They
have to exploit that opportunity.
FedEx lost an opportunity to make more money, and I have to wait until
January 24th to get the wheels.
It snowed here TODAY. Took me 3+ hours to go the 55 miles from work to
home, and I left just before 2 pm.
I just heard on the news that there is a 35 mile backup (yep 35 miles) from
Washington, DC to Baltimore, MD on I-95.
It was a LIGHT snow today, only 2 - 3 inches. We're expecting a heavy snow
Friday and Saturday.
It would indeed be nice to have the winter tires on the car.

All this Miata talk is really great, wait, no, we are talking about
shipping things more. How fun. Snow tires are great, but they don't
allow you to drive over traffic, you don't NEED snow tires to drive in
snow. Honestly guys, can we talk about nothing rather than shipping
services, if you want anything in life, you usually have to pay for it,
FedEx and UPS or whoever run a business, yes, they are missing this
/great/ opportunity to make more money, but do you understand how much
of a hassle that would be? It just couldn't be done, look at it from
their point of view, they ship a ton of things per day, it just can't
happen. If you want it faster, pay more, period.
-Colin
p.s. Yeah, I know I said stop talking about shipping and then I went and
talked about shipping, oh well. Excuse the poor sentance structure or
run on sentances, I am sick, heavily medicated, and just had a long day.

Couldn't happen?
What say we make the scanners beep (updated in realtime via wi-fi)
when an updated package gets scanned? Then the person scanning the
package can take it out of the loop and put the upgraded sticker on
it.
There is BIG money out there for Symbol Technologies or the like to to
put that kind of technology to work. Actually, I bet they already are.
Funny thing, I got this new boss and I work in the grocery industry.
I'm half-tempted to send this to him, just to see if he knows if this
exists....

I'm half-tempted to send this to him, just to see if he knows if this
exists....

In an effort to make everyone (myself included) feel better about this
shipping debacle, I have created a new yahoo group just for this discussion.
(email redacted)
You freight gurus can sign up here
finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/shippingtalk/
Now, can we get back to something more constructive, like why turbos are
better than superchargers or something?

In an effort to make everyone (myself included) feel better about this
shipping debacle, I have created a new yahoo group just for this discussion.
(email redacted)
You freight gurus can sign up here
finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/shippingtalk/
Now, can we get back to something more constructive, like why turbos are
better than superchargers or something?

Stating that you don't need snow tires to drive in snow shows you aren't
from Michigan. Trust me - you DO need snow tires to drive in our snow,
at least if your regular tires are summer sport compound. When the snow
is taller than your ground clearance and you're effectively snowplowing,
you do need those snow tires.

You would be right, I am from Wisconsin, pretty much the same thing in
my book. For the record, I have Blizzaks on my winter car (240sx) but I
also plan ahead and got them not only before I needed them, but got them
on the car before the first snow. Amazing concept, I know.

You would be right, I am from Wisconsin, pretty much the same thing in

also plan ahead and got them not only before I needed them, but got them
on the car before the first snow. Amazing concept, I know.

I went for 3 years without snow tires, but that was before I saw the
light. After that, I won't do a winter without them. The best part is
if you get them on a set of steelies you can just throw them up on the
rafters in the garage, and then you don't ever have to plan ahead again!
Nothing like looking outside and seeing the first 12"+ snowfall and
knowing you have the wheels/tires already :-)

And I live farther north than all of you. Drove my miata year round without
snow tires for several winters. The miata was my only car. I never got it
stuck, unless I was trying to go up a hill covered in ice. On level ground,
without snows, the miata is unstoppable, 2" of snow, 8" of snow on the road,
didn't matter. It's a great little snow plow. Snow tires are nice, I
admit, but necessary? Driver skill/experience has more to do with driving
safety than what you're driving, or what kind of tires you're running. I'm
not saying don't buy snow tires for whatever you're driving, I'm just saying
that if you're not comfortable with the road conditions, maybe it's a good
day to take a cab or hibernate or something. I'm living proof that those of
us with no budget for multiple sets of tires can make due without.

Matt
