The hardtop gives you more room than the softtop -- that's one reason a cus=
tom cage is a bit nicer than one derived from, say, a Hard Dog rollbar that=
's been designed to fit within a softtop.

I am building a custom cage (8 pt or more) and need the bars as high as pos=
sable. My main concern is the upper side bar next to my head. I like the =
way a hard top looks and plan on getting one for my drag car.
Thanks

You'll definitely need to pad all the tubes near your head with SFI padding=
(not cheap!). For Miata cage inspiration, you might cruise through the pad=
dock at the next Spec Miata race -- ideally, with a digital camera. The lat=
est evolutions of cage designs even mount the front cross-bar so that the d=
ash is not captive, although I don't really know how that all comes togethe=
r.=20
FWIW, I've compiled some pics here (you might have to cut/paste the whole U=
RL):

If the top doesn't need to be water tight you could cut the top where the
bars interfere. This is bound to give more room as the entire tube won't
need to be inside the top.

Wow I don't think I would want that set brace in the center of my back if h=

Wow I don't think I would want that set brace in the center of my back if=
hit hard from behind, looks like it would knock the sh** out of you if hit=
from behind, or a little harder and snap a few vertebrae.

Well I am sure it is, but if truly hit hard, it looks like a mistake. I wou=
ld not want to back into a wall at 100 and have the center of my back suppo=
rted and the seat folding around the pedestal. Really tight picture, and ca=
n't see the dimensions, so It may at first it may appear worse than it is.

Where else would you put it? FWIW, I'd think the seat would distribute th=
e load pretty well.

I think I would want it lower, but you can snap your neck just as easy, if =
the seat folds over, just doesn't look good to me, on first look.

Actually that's required SCCA seat bracing.

You'll definitely need to pad all the tubes near your head with SFI p=
adding (not cheap!). For Miata cage inspiration, you might cruise through t=
he paddock at the next Spec Miata race -- ideally, with a digital camera. T=
he latest evolutions of cage designs even mount the front cross-bar so that=
the dash is not captive, although I don't really know how that all comes t=
ogether.=20
FWIW, I've compiled some pics here (you might have to cut/paste the w=

I am building a custom cage (8 pt or more) and need the bars as hig=
h as possable. My main concern is the upper side bar next to my head. I l=
ike the way a hard top looks and plan on getting one for my drag car.
Thanks

The hardtop gives you more room than the softtop -- that's one re=
ason a custom cage is a bit nicer than one derived from, say, a Hard Dog ro=
llbar that's been designed to fit within a softtop.

In respects to a cage will a hardtop give you any more or l=
ess room than a soft top. I am Dont mind removing any lining on the inside=
