Speaking of gauges, how are y'all mounting them these days-- Les' pod is
ideal really, too bad its not ready for '94-on yet. Helio's got a kicking
console from Japan, $$$ if you can find it. Aside from A-pillar mounts, are
there any suitable universal gauge (dashtop) mounting kits? Eliminating the
eyeball vents is not acceptable to me.

Before I got Les' pod, I was working on using a dual gauge pod made for
Mustangs. Now, the only dash top area I have left is in front of the
passenger.

In my case, I'm having a/f ratio and boost on the pillar, with voltmeter and
oil temperature in the space below my (aftermarket) radio....

Todd

BTW- where can I pick up some abs plastic blanks to mount the gauges?

I have one A-piller mount for the air/fuel gauge, and then I use the
Mickey-Mouse type pods (imported from Japan, couldn't find a US version) to
mount an EGT gauge on the left and a boost gauge on the right.

It looks reasonable to me, and I still have the air vents and stock radio.

Because of the left dash pod the A-piller mount is pretty high up, a dual
A-piller mount might not have enough room. If I need to mount more gauges
though, I'm going to remove the stock radio and put them under there. This
car is approaching an off-road only car, so that wouldn't be an issue for
me, but likely would be for many others.

I got mine from Speedlab <speedlab.com>.

All things considered, I'm happy, but I might not do it again if asked. It
was a few e-mails, and a phone call to Japan to leave my credit card number
on their answering machine (which was about a $17 phone call because my cell
phone won't call over-seas (and neither will work's) and I had to use an
operator to complete the call), and then I had to paint the pods myself.

They are nice pods, high quality workmanship (right up until the painting at
least :-> ), but I would probably invest the $150 in learning how to lay
fiberglass rather than buying another set...

This may sound funny, but I found some flat plastic
mud flaps as Wal-Mart, or Target or such. These things
made great stock for making gauge plates for stereo
openings. Plastic was black, solid through. The
greatest part was, on the one side it was a grainy
texture, the other was just a matte finish. So you
had a coice of style! Another great part was that the
material was slightly soft, like really hard rubber,
so you could cut it with an Xacto knife (it takes
several passes), and since it is not brittle it
doesn't crack while your trying to cut the hole in it.

Unfortunately I have not seen the exact ones I bought
lately. I made sevaral single din gauge holders out
of just the two I bought a long time ago. (I kept
changing my mind and redoing it) The results were
great though.

Hmm, are these ABS plastic, unfinished fiberglass, or?
The more I look forward to moving my gauges off the A pillar, the more I
think they may be even more distracting by needing to look away from the
road to the console...I got it, we need a HUD reflected onto the
windshield! (that WOULD be too cool if sunlight didn't hose it too
badly!)

The pods I got from Speedlab are white fiberglass (which is the source of my
comment about learning how to do fiberglass, which I could then use to start
making my own body parts... hehe, now things are getting expensive).

They are nice. Very smooth. The bottoms line up very well with the bottom
of the dash (though as all things aftermarket, they are only about 95%
perfect) I didn't do any prep before painting them, I just went to the
local hardware store and bought a flat black paint that looked to match the
finish of the Miata's plastic gauge pod. I put on two coats. I think I did
a pretty good job in matching the finish, but again, it's not perfect.

In driving around while trying to tune the Link I noticed that I could
easily watch the right pod (boost) while keeping my eyes on the road too.
It's not much off of the speedometer, so it's not too far away from where
you might be looking anyway.

The ones on their web site appear to just be painted versions of the
fiberglass ones. It caught me by surprise that they were going to need to
be painted.

The pods come with double sided tape already applied to them, just peel and
stick.

You do need to drill through the dash cover to run the wires though (well,
not if you don't care about seeing the wires I guess).

Drilling through the top of the dash isn't a problem. I drilled two 1/4"
holes for each pod. The pods are long enough that the holes come out behind
the inner shroud, so you never see any wires or holes from inside the
instrument panel. It all ends up looking very clean.

Same problem here...hence the "$$$ kicking console" !! ;-)
Not much options, if you don't want to go for the A-pillar ! Under the
radio, you can't read them, while driving...I have some there, but
they are for less important functions. BTW, added a 'intake temp
gauge', and a digital speedo, with 0-60mph funtions, and top speed
memories ! They sould be interesting...

Heh, anyone got a waterproof enclosure to fit AF, EGT, Oil pressure, water
temp, and maybe two more 'for good measure'?

That's actually NOT a bad idea, aside from the theft factor...used to see
plenty of musclecars with tachs outside mounted(from factory, '69 GTO Judge
I think?), and occasionaly a mechanical fuel pressure gauge...sigh, but
alarms for gauges is just too much ;-)

Scott

PS- the gauge really does look nice there though :)

Agreed. If you can't find the mudflaps there, you can find plenty at
Pep Boys. The best part is the price! Like $4.99 for the pair. ABS is
pretty expensive, especially if you're sourcing it from a car stereo
shop.

Thanks Scott,

I recently removed my black face gauge for a silver face (PLUG: Its
for sale in miata.net) and it was not easy! So I don't think anyone
can steal the gauge just becuase those fuel lines have to be gorrila
tight so that they don't leak. My only concern is some bozo trying to
steal it and damaging my hood. I do have an alarm though. I don't know
about electric gauges in rain, but I'm sure most mechanical gauges will
be fine in the autometer cup.

Scott,

A radar-type alarm could easily be set to include the area in front of the
windshield, also many (most?) alarms systems have impact sensors. Together,
these would make it difficult to remove gauges from the hood. I have both of
these on Wheezy and trying to remove the windshield wipers can set off the
alarm.

FWIW,

Mel
