Sorry, Mark's pics are a I-4, my link is a Mazda V-6. Kinda odd as the
displacements have a fair amount of overlap and all Ford Duratecs to date
have been V-6 designs (2.5 and 3.0L). SAE article is interesting, almost
thought they were about to talk about Feng Shui design principles ....

Similar in nature with the same goals, but different actual motors and
interesting section on cam vs crank triggers, but they forgot to emphasize
that the biggest difference was a distributor vs DF coils.

No, that's the K-series motor that was in the MX-6, Probe GT, MX-3.
It's the one that has to sit at an angle, so is only useful for
transverse FWD mounting.

Here is what I got from a couple of Ford insiders:
#1- "Not sure what that engine is.... looks like a 2.3L I-4 for a Ranger, but
I'm not positive. I'll have to go and pull up the casting numbers to verify.
I don't believe the future Miata will use it, but you never know".
- Ford ROMEO Michigan Powertrain Development
#2-"That is a 2001 2.3L 16V engine used in Ranger Pick ups. It's a new engine
that replaced the 2.5L as the standard engine. Used in late 2001 and 2002
models. It does have Mazda roots, but my sources can't verify future use".
- Ford Master Shop Technican VA
Still working on it.

Interestingly, none of the pictures show the engine at an angle, is it just a
pick up / oil pan design.

Number 1 is the new 2.0 for the Ford Mondero.
Number 2 is the new 2.3 2001.5 Ford Ranger Motor
These are slightly different from the Mazda 6 Motors since the Mazda will
have variable cam timing and the Ford will not.
The future Mazda motor will have a great deal in common with this motor.

Wow, that's huge. ;)
Now seriously... That was only different above 5200 RPM as well. Which
would indicate at slower speeds spark scatter was negligable.
