Hey folks....just a follow up question to something
I asked a few weeks ago.

Tracking down an slight exhaust leak...and all indications
I hear point to something at the turbo manifold-head junction.

Everything is nice and tight...but I am wondering now if I may have
a cracked gasket, or worse small crack in the manifold on the bottom
side.

Do gaskets commonly fail on FI cars?

Replacement suggestions?

My leak is very small...and you can only hear it above 2-3 PSI...I don't
think I am at risk for any warpage...but perhaps that is a false
pretense and I should R&R the turbo ASAP. It does bug me,
and I do want to work on it....just figured I would ask those
who may have BTDT already :)

cheers,

- b

Brian,
Can't remember ever replacing the gasket from head to manifold.

BTDT on the exhaust manifold gasket. I had expected to find stripped threads on one of the manifold-to-head studs or a warped manifold, but in my case it was the gasket. It's hard to believe, but I actually had one of the three metal layers of the gasket blow out, leaving a path for an exhaust leak. I installed a new gasket w/o any machining or flatening of the surfaces (manifold) and the leak is fixed.

BTW, while I had the manifold out, I did see a small crack but so far it seems to still be holding up ok. I suppose that if the crack gets really bad, the manifold could be welded... I guess. I don't know if there is much luck in that.

Just a few days ago someone else on this list reported burning through
one, but the only way I can see it happening is for a grain of sand (or
similar) to get trapped between the layers during assembly.

You sure there's no debris between the mating surfaces?

You can get a leak if you tighten the manifold down the wrong way. You
should tighten the nuts/bolts starting from the center and working toward
the ends.

Leaking hot gases will erode the gasket and mating surfaces.
