I'm glad to report a happy conclusion!

The extra pin was removed from the gearbox turret and the old shifter then
fitted fine with some minor adaptation of bushes, etc. The gear knob sits a
little higher but the change is significantly smoother.

It's still a little perplexing though: the 'box was taken from a '97 1.8
MkI, yet looks identical to a MkII 'box, except with a mechanical speedo?!?
The centre part of the 'box is of significantly larger cross section, so
let's hope it's a little sturdier (I've never seen that mentioned before).

Thanks to everyone one who jumped to help out - particularly Todd Paciorek
who's been through the process before and taken pictures along the way, and
Malcolm Gray-Stephens who seems to have more UK breakers numbers that Yellow
Pages!

The powerlist comes to the rescue again!

Glenn
(who was preparing himself for a 2nd weekend without transport)

Any identifying marks on this mystery tranny??? Maybe there was a
shortage and something was substituted at one point in production??
Might be "the tranny" to look for it it could be found???

Well, I haven't actually *seen* the tranny yet - I dropped the car off with
a broken one and picked it up with the new one - description wise I'm going
by what the mechanic said...I know, I know, I should have been fitting it
myself...

However, I'll be under the car at the weekend checking out the quality of
the work so if I see anything significant I'll make a note - I did notice my
old one still has a small bar code sticker near the PPF bracket.

Huh???

You had someone else do this!!! :)

Actually it would have been great to have comparison side by side
pictures. Too bad. Was the mechanic a Miata guy??? The reason I ask
is that I've found sometimes these mystery differences are really if the
guy doesn't really know the car. Just a thought.
