Rotors yes, caliper... dunno. Although if one side is way more used than
the other, it may already be sticking... (caliper)
Use the ebrake the best you can, but plan on new rotors in addition to
pads.

is it possible to damage a caliper if you let the brake pads go too
long? anyone ever mangled one because they didnt change pads in time?
my pads are making a HORRIBLE noise on one side so i know theyre
shot, but i wont have time to change them till saturday. Just curious
if i should expect a bad caliper by then.

I have seen pictures of people who wore through the pads and the
backing plates and started grinding the caliper piston against the
rotor. This requires ignoring a lot of noise. :)

You would have to wear through the steel backing plate of the pads before
you were on the caliper. You would have to be driving that way for awhile.

if no ones ever SEEN a caliper get damaged to the point of unusability
this way i wont worry about it. and yeah, ive been flexing my ebrake
muscles a lot lately and just taking it easy. I just got back from
the gap and my buddy totally trashed my brakes up there, what little
was left of them.

How are axis for the street? I don't think I want to spend the money on Big
Brakes, but I could use a little more stopping power. Steel lines seems
like "fake" additonal brakes, but better pads would not be.
This is *definately* a street set up. A little dust and some noise is to be
expected, but I want reasonably quiet pads that will stop the first time on
my morning commute, etc. It would be nice if the dusting weren't TERRIBLE
and if I could avoid replacing the rotors with every set of pads...
Anyways, I have a freind who can get me a set of pads cheap, but I'm trying
to decide if it's worth it. He had another suggestion (metal something or
other that I can't remember) but I just want to make sure I'm thinking along
a reasonable path, first.

Had those on the 97, worked good as I recall.
I can't remember if they were dusters or squeakers... or neither.. I do
like my current Wilwoods, tho. :)

How are axis for the street? I don't think I want to spend the money on
Big
Brakes, but I could use a little more stopping power. Steel lines seems
like "fake" additonal brakes, but better pads would not be.
This is *definately* a street set up. A little dust and some noise is to
be
expected, but I want reasonably quiet pads that will stop the first time on
my morning commute, etc. It would be nice if the dusting weren't TERRIBLE
and if I could avoid replacing the rotors with every set of pads...
Anyways, I have a freind who can get me a set of pads cheap, but I'm trying
to decide if it's worth it. He had another suggestion (metal something or
other that I can't remember) but I just want to make sure I'm thinking
along
a reasonable path, first.

Had those on the 97, worked good as I recall.
I can't remember if they were dusters or squeakers... or neither.. I do
like my current Wilwoods, tho. :)

I think the axxis ultimates are great for the street. I have run stock pads
at least 3 times, but when I installed the ultimates, I noticed a very good
improvement in initial bite, and during a 90 minute session at the track
(when the car was still N/A), I noticed no fade.
I'll guess that they are at about 60-70% of their total effectiveness until
the first 20 MPH stop in the morning, and after that they're good to go.
They dust about the same as stock brakes, but the dust they produce washes
off with a water hose, no scrubbing.

Hey! Thanks! A more glowing review I cannot imagine, at least in terms of
telling me what I want to hear. If it's like you say, it's perfect. I
won't be stopping for my life on them cold, but I don't want to have to
spend 30 minutes warming them up. Dust that washes off I can live with, and
as long as I don't get any big looks for the squeaking or need a stero
upgrade, I think I'm there. Beats a whole new brake system, for sure!

Steel lines make it easier to modulate at the limit. You don't get any
extra braking, but you get better control over what you have. Probably
moot if you have ABS, though.

I've been running Porterfield R4S pads for a long time now. They're
dusty*, but they work very, very well. Braking for Turn 1 on the morning
commute will be a little long, but that's it. Very rotor friendly, in my
experience.
*Nothing compared to German OEM pads, though.

Metal Masters, that's the Axxis (used to be Repco?) pad.
I ran a set of those once, and wasn't overwhelmed. They work well, but
they aren't Porterfields. If you want cheap street pads, Raybestos PG+
are much better than they should be. They're cheap, rotor friendly, work
a little better than stock, and don't dust horribly. I tracked a set
once, and never had a fade problem.

Got me, never tried. Not something I thought I should ever figure out. ;)
Not the world, just your front brakes.. Once the rivets are gone, I bet it
doesn't stop as well... smooth metal on metal isn't as grippy as rivets
against rotor... I like the grinding feel in the pedal the best.

Too many decisions! :-) I just want cheap, streetable, and better stopping
than OEM. Not really going to track it, either. Autocross, but not serious
track. I think the Ultimates are better if you're going with Axis, right?
I'll have to check out these Raybestos, how do you think they compare to the
Ultimates?

So steel lines are fake brakes but your worried about the MC moving????
HUH????
The Axxis are fine on the street, add the steel lines and get a better pedal

I've got a 90 with upgraded 94-97 brakes. I ran Axxis Ultimates for
about a year before they were done. They really bite, I loved the
feel, but they do dust like mad. Due to $$ I'm currently running
Autozone specials which, predictably, suck, though I expect them to
last significantly longer than a year (not that I intend to keep them
that long). I think next time I'll try EBC Green stuff pads to try to
get a street performance pad with less dusting than the Axxis.

Josh,
The subject of brakes comes around every so often so if you've heard me
say this before, my apologies.
In my opinion, EBC Green Stuff pads should be called Brown Stuff they
are so bad. They feel good (or at least better than stock) at first but
they dust and they aren't that much of an improvement after a bit. The
really bad thing is that they made my rotors feel warped. I bedded them
per the manufacturer's instructions but they deposited (unevenly) some
material on my rotors so that the pedal would begin to pulse after about
10K miles. I'd take off the rotors, have them turned, put 'em back and
repeat after 10K miles. I finally bought new rotors (Brembo) and pads
(Hawk?) and had no more problems. There was a thread a month ago or so
regarding this phenomenon in general. I've only experienced it with
EBCs. Too many other good choices to try it again.
JMHO,
Curtis

Last time I saw a set of brakes like that, the rotor wore through to

I don't think the Ultimates dust excessively. Besides, if your brakes
aren't making some dust how are the brakes working??? The trick is to find
a pad that the dust doesn't weld itself to the wheel!!!

I second that question. Our 6 Wagen will completely dirty the wheels in a
couple of days of daily commute. They will show dust 10 miles after having
the car detailed. After a week it's hard to tell where the aluminum stops
and the rubber begins.
They stop well and have good feel but boy are they dirty. They are worse
than any aftermarket pads I've ever had on my Miata. They're as bad as some
of the Bimmer pads I see.

I think that's your answer. IIRC, there is a TUV requirement for a
certain graphite content in the pads. German marques put these pads on
everything they build. Other marques just put them on the German market
cars, and spare the rest of the world all the trouble cleaning their wheels.
Any Germans (or others familiar with such TUV arcana) able to confirm or
deny this?
In any case, maybe Mazda has started putting the "common-denominator"
pads on all cars now?

Not sure about the TUV requirements, but I know from a Ford spokesperson
that excessive brake dust is the #1 complaint on most of their vehicles.
The pads on my wife's Escape, and just about every other Escape I see on the
road, dust awful. Explorers are also bad, I've noticed. I don't think it
was a requirement for Ford, but just that the pads worked very well, and
IMO, on the Escape they really do.
