45 degrees may not be the exact angle, but with the pan in the car and a 1/2
drill, ain't no way your gonna get 10-20 degrees off of horizontal. It is a
steep angle, whatever it is. May be 30 degrees including the angle of the
pan. The main question or point that I had was wheter or not drilling at an
angle would increase or decrease the chance of hitting the pickup tube.

Jess, I've never been inside the pan yet but looking at the manual I'd
say if he drilled at a severe angle in increased the chance of hitting
the tube. But he would have had to drill pretty steep and deep to hit
it.

Mine was definitely *not* more than 20 degrees. As a machine designer, I'm
certain of the angle and would have found anything greater than 20 degrees
unacceptable, which would have led me to explore another way of drilling the
hole. I wonder if there is a difference between 1.6 and 1.8 engines.

As far as hitting the pickup tube goes, IIRC there was mention of this
possibility in the installation instructions, and that if you were careful
not to allow the bit to penetrate too far into the pan, there was no
concern. Wish I had more info for you, Jess.

It also depends on whether you have Air Conditioning or not. With the AC
pump there it's tougher to drill straight. I welded on an extenstion and
had a 3 foot drill bit....I'd say mine was at a 30 degree angle. I was
careful not to do ANYTHING but drill the pan... Now that the engine is out
of the car I'm welding up the hole and moving it down a bit and
straightening it out.... (BTW Jess, I've been emailing LGO directly...)
