Went racing all day yesterday at Carlsbad Raceway... took 8-9 runs
down the strip. Don't know what my problem is, but the best I
could muster was a 13.91 @ 104 mph. My launches seemed alright,
was getting 2.2-2.4 60 foot times. I imagine clutch slippage
is the culprit... I'm not even chirping the tires in second.
I was consistently hitting the 1/8 mile at 82-83 mph, but at
9.15-9.3 seconds, while I noticed other cars were hitting
it about 8.5 seconds at that speed. Wheelspin was real hard
to control on the launch... seemed to do best dropping the
clutch at 3500 rpm.
Due to my pitiful results yesterday (plus the car was driving
kind of rough this morning), I decided to do a compression check.
I got 160-162-155-160, 1-4. There was some oil in cylinders
1 and 3. Is this necessarily a problem? I've had boost spikes
up to 20 psi recently when monkeying with the boost control, could
this just be blowby from overboost (otherwise fine at 15 psi),
or do the seals really need to be replaced. My dipstick reads
half full, changed oil 2k miles ago. Believe the head gasket
is alright, at least don't see clouds of white smoke coming
out of the tailpipe.
BTW, anyone have an extra Link keypad they'd like to sell? I
left mine in the passenger seat yesterday at the car wash... stupid
attendant must have cracked a window open before it went through
as my interior was soaked. Anyway it doesn't seem to work anymore.
TIA. - Beau

Just a couple notes on the drag times...
What system are you running? IIRC it's a FM2 on a 1.6, right? If so, those
are about the exact same times I turned a couple months back. From what I
have found out since then, one of the big culprits of getting the thing
launched quickly is the Torsen 4.11 gearing instead of the stock 4.3. I
noticed a difference in "snap" by seat of the pants, I think that is the
wrong ratio for the strip.
Reasoning: The launch is the most important part of the run, every tenth you
make up there translates into a few tenths at the end of the run. Your MPH
was very high, did you look at other times when you were there? I've seen
people running high 12s with 104 mph. I don't know enough to interpret that,
but I'm sure it has to do with having the "pull" of the car transferred more
towards the top end wit the 4.11...
Also, what boost were you running? I was at 14, but I'm fairly sure I have a
cooked cat sitting under there that I need removed. I'll know more this
spring.
Bottom line - don't be too ashamed of those times, there are very few cars
on the road that fill keep up with you.

Beau,
Was the oil in the chambers or on the outside of the plugs?

Before giving up on it, try removing the innerds from the case and washing them
with circuit board cleaner and wait for it to all evaporate. Don't get any on
the case though.

Liquid crystal displays only work when their internal liquid is very fluid. As
they get cold, their response time drops rapidly until they freeze up. The
rest of the parts continue to work at much lower temps than the display, so if
you wait long enough for the display to respond you may see meaningful data on
screens where the displayed values aren't changing.

I had this problem with one of my Miata's. It was actually the valve cover
gasket allowing oil to fill the bottom of the spark plug well. When you
remove the spark plugs the threads get soaked with oil. I had to do a double
take myself. If you thing about it the oil shouldn't survive the combustion
event on the spark plug. Also the plug doesn't stick out that far into the
combustion chamber.

Beau,
The trap speed of 104 isn't that bad. When I ran my 13.9 I was only
going through the traps at 100 but my turbo didn't seem to be spinning
freely when I pulled the intake and check the wheel. I think I pulled a
2.2 60 on that one. You probably won't chirp the tires much at the
strip in second given that our first gear flies by so fast you're still
running on the gummed up tread from the bigger cars running slicks.
Plus as you noted, launching is pretty tough trying to control
wheelspin. It's even tougher to get a good launch AND get a good 1-2
shift. My best 60 ft was a 2.0. I crapped the 2-3 shift though. It
takes a lot of practice just like any other driving to get it down. I
haven't been to the strip in so long I probably forgot how to stage.
Hopefully the car will be fully together and tuned by late Feb early
March when the temps are cool here and the tracks start to open again.
All other things equal, shaving 1/10 off of your 60 will shave 2/10 off
of your ET.

When I ran my 12.775, it was at 106.01 MPH. I had a 2.010 second 60 ft.
time and was somewhere around 88 MPH in the 1/8th.
