The only free tests around here are free re-tests if that shop performs the
required repairs. And yes, all tests, good or bad, are saved by the DMV.

Subject: Does CA Red Flag first time "Smog Fails" (NPC)

Hey California Guys in particular:

Do we have anything to loose if the car fails the first time around? I am
thinking about doing a "pre-smog check" dyno session. Now, I realize that
some places won't charge if you fail. So, from a cost perspective, it makes
sense to just get checked. BUT! If you DO fail does your car somehow go on
record as *having failed*??.... Some kind of notorious Smog Check Red Flag
in your file?

If so, it would seem that the *expense* of Smog tuning the car on the Dyno
to get a "Smog MAP" file, would be worth it. Of course .....since I am there
anyway why not get tuned it for the *track* also ;-)

Feedback?

Thanks

I'd suggest you go ahead and pay the $40 and tell them outfront you want a
"pretest" only. This will give you the numbers, but the data will NOT be
sent to the DMV. If you do pass, you will have to pay another $40 and
retest, this time with the data submitted to the DMV.

Yes, it's a good idea. It saved my bacon. My pretest came back as a "Gross
Polluter". Had that data gone to the DMV, my options would have narrowed
considerably. Not a good thing.

And you want to pass by a decent margin. Otherwise, next time you will
probably be flagged for a "test only" station. Not a disaster, but fewer
options, as Lucie suggests. And, test only stations are more likely to be
rule sticklers, as that is their only business. So, if you have anything too
obviously not covered by an EO, they won't hook you up.
