Hi all,
I am going to pick up a RB Type 2 Nose kit.
Am I nutz to even consider painting it myself? Hey I *can* handle a can
of Krylon fairly well ;-) But I'm wodering if I would be in over my
head with a feature of the car that is, of course, pretty damn
important. But that I also think would be fun. I am also thinking of
painting the lower portion of the sides (over the black stripe). I do
have an old belt drive craftsman compressor, 20 gal and IIRC approx 4.5
CFM @ 90 psi.
On a scale of 1 - 10 for a beginner.....10 is... "DUOH!!" How difficult?
Interested in your thoughts, I am positive many have done this
successfully!
TIA

Harry,
It's probably about a "8" the first time and drops
fast as you get more experience.
I painted my car including the RB kit, a year ago.
Check out Harbor Freight for their $49 HVLP spray gun.
(purple one) You want to use this type of sprayer.
The 2 part epoxy paint is the best but expensive. Note
that this paint will kill you if you inhale it. You
will need an approved respirator or an air mask.
Use a respirator, what ever paint you use!
The hardest part is adjusting the gun. There is a thin
fine balance between air pressure from compressor, air
adjustment (gun), & paint adjustment. It is also
different setting for the primer and the paint.
Fine a good & patience paint shop and will help you
select the paint and supplies.
The lower portion of the RB, will chip over time. I'm
looking into the 3M stone guard.
If you matching a metallic like silver, you might
consider having a professional, do it. Air pressure
can effect how the metallic is suspended in the
paint. This changes the look & color.
Good luck, Jim

I got the RB front bumper cover, rear bumper cover, side skirts & hard boot
and painted them all myself with good results. Since the pieces are hard
fiberglass you will not need flex additives. The biggest bitch is the prep
work. It is also the most important. The Racing Beat stuff is far from
ready to paint as it is delivered.
You will need a good water trap & oil filter for your compressor, very
important.
Lights, lotsa lights.
A good organic vapor respirator, gloves & a paper Tyvek suit.
A decent top feed HVLP spray gun. Conventional guns are nice but not too
good for the DIYr in the garage since they make so much over spray.
Since your car is an early M1 it will need a single stage paint if the
orignal paint. Good for a beginner. Bad, that it is red and red fades so
it probably won't match. To match you need to mix paint in with clear and
fog it.....IOW, not beginner stuff.
PPG epoxies & urethanes are excellent and do not have the really bad
components that require a supplied air respirator and full spray booth,
although that would be ideal. So would spraying with nitrogen but the DIYrs
don't normally have that either. Your paint shop should be willing to give
you pointers if they are willing to sell to the public.
Make sure you follow the paint manufactures instructions on mixing and
application to the letter. There is not much wiggle room with today's
catalytic paints. You could use acrylic enamel but since it is the nose of
the car go ahead and spend the extra dollars for epoxy/urethane.
All that to say it would probably be rated an eight but with your Krylon
background maybe a seven ;)
Good Luck,
Billy Hodgson

Hi All,
Looking for some collective wisdom on my painting project equipment. I
am shopping for an HVLP Spray Gun. However some of them require 50psi
max *BUT* at least a "9 cfm" rate.
My older belt driven craftsman compressor is rated at 5.8cfm @ 40psi
and 4.8cfm @90psi. That's waaayyyy below the requirements I am seeing!
Are there HVLP guns that can work with my compressor or am I screwed?
Will these guns work by some slim chance?
Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Harry,
Well, sorry to say that it may be difficult with a smaller compressor. Most
of the Devilbiss or Sata HVLP guns that I have seen really require 15 CFM to
work properly. None of the HVLP guns really use 50 PSI, they regulate it
down right before the gun. If it is a small area you are doing, and your
compressor fills the tank rapidly, you could spray until you run out of air.
Then wait. Then continue spraying, etc. Hopefully the paint doesn't flash
off before you can start spraying again.
Why not just go with a nice gravity feed Devilbiss? It takes a real pro to
lay down a nice coat with a 1000 dollar HVLP Sata Jet, but even a hack like
me can put down an even coat with a regular gravity feed gun. The new
gravity feed guns can even spray upside down with the paint bags, and they
don't waste nearly as much paint as the older guns. The problem with using
a HVLP gun with a smaller compressor, is that the paint will not be atomized
into fine enough droplets...that's where orange peel starts. Even the pros
have trouble with orange peel using a HVLP gun.
Check out the Painting 101 message board.
autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/config.pl?index and
www.autobodystore.com
They helped me out when I was deciding.

Hi All,
Curious what the group wisdom is on this one:
Is it better to Paint the RB Nose & Side fairings:
1-when mounted on the car
2-off of the car...then mount 'em.
About the spray the primer and started wondering about that.....
Thanks as usual!

Off the car. You'll get the edges & creases.
Make sure it fits perfectly before you paint.
Good luck

Off the car. You will have to get some seam sealer for the side skirts and
paint that after they are put on the car though.
