Bill,

I will be absent again this year. Mechanical problems are the culprit, and
parts lead times will have me down for about a week. Hope everyone has a
great time.

Enjoy,
Greg Edgar

Bill,

Thanks for the most gracious offer. The problem is two-fold. I have
excessive runout (>0.050) on the trigger wheel for the mag pickup of the TEC
II. I was getting too much noise at higher RPMs, and the computer was
responding incorrectly. In the process of working this, I underestimated
the runout, and placed the mag pickup too close to the trigger wheel. You
can imagine what happened . . .

Electromotive said their mag pickups are custom made and I would need to
order one. In a heroic attempt to laugh in the face of disappointment, I
took the old OEM mag pickup from my 1.8 out of the no longer used parts box,
and milled up a bracket to mount it in the same location as the dead one. I
am now running again, but until I address the trigger wheel problem, I
cannot get the clearance low enough to avoid the noise. In it's current
state, it runs fine up to about 3.8k before the noise gets to be a problem
and the RPMs read by the ECU drop while actual RPMs are increasing. The ECU
then resets, requiring cycling of the key to resume operation. Lets see, if
I keep the RPMs <3.5k I can get there in . . . OH NEVER MIND! I will have
to pull the radiator and IC plumbing to remove the crank pulley assembly so
I can get it re-trued. I suspect this is residual damage from when the 4
bolts sheared that held the trigger wheel to the crank pulley. The odd
thing is that I ran two track events after the repair before this became a
problem. I hope the problem is not more severe.

Hope all goes smooth for you.

Thanks again for the offer of help.

Enjoy,
Greg Edgar
