I'm going to throw in my ACT clutch this weekend, and have been searching
around for info on what kind of grease to get. I saw a few references to
moly grease, but the closest thing I could find in the stores around here
was grease that was "blended with moly." There was also some mobil 1
synthetic grease that looked like it was better for high temp, high
pressure, high everything applications...rated -45*F to 400*F. It looked
better than the "blended" grease. More expensive too. I picked up a stick
of this stuff - think it will work good?

What should I lube, just the throwout bearing and fork?

Thanks,
Ray Ackley

The thicker, higher temp grease is the best. I usually use the fiberous
wheel bearing grease.

Put a dab in the pivot point socket, a film on the fingers where they ride
on the throwout bearing and a film on the collar around the input shaft that
the throwout bearing rides on. There is usually a groove on the inside
diameter of the throwout bearing designed to hold a little reserve grease as
well.

I also put a film on the input shaft splines and then wipe as much of it off
as I can. This aids installation as well as keeping the fore and aft
movement between the disk and input shaft freed up.

I've done several clutch jobs. Mostly on Hondas, but I've done a Miata
before. On all of them, I used some grease from Honda that they call "High
Temp Urea Grease." It comes in a little tub, and it's a bluish-green color.
It's a very smooth grease, although a bit thick. I had to pull my
transmission after 3,000 hard miles (road racing and autocrossing) on an
aluminum flywheel and cerametallic clutch because I pulled the engine to get
some work done. Anyway, when I pulled it, the grease was perfectly fine.
It had not disintegrated with heat or hardened. All the other clutches I
have done worked fine. The grease works quite well from what I can tell.
