Along the current discussion lines of transmissions/drivetrains handling
high HP, I have a further dilema. Short of replacing my automatic tranny
with a manual [something I am not looking foward to], has anybody had any
experience adding forced induction [either Supercharger/turbocharger] to a
Miata with an automatic transmission? Normally I have read all the
discussions about swapping out the clutch on the manuals with a performance
one etc. Was curious as to how much HP I can really add to my Miata before
having to swap the tranny out of necessity. I am perfectly happy adding a
J/R Supercharger to get the extra HP but without going over the limit, but a
turbocharger set up would be ideal. I have a 92' Miata.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You need to go to the Sebring list and ask this. I know there are a few
people that have auto/Sebring set ups. I think the Sebring is quite
well suited for a auto. Low end grunt and not a ton of overall power to
tear the tranny apart.

True, but keep in mind that an auto tranny inherently does a fine job in
hiding any turbo lag, so an entry level turbo kit (e.g. BEGI Stage 1 if you
want to be able to upgrade eventually, or Greddy if you're happy with
Sebring level power).

In any case, a transmission cooler would be a good idea, as would changing
the fluid to synthetic.

Andy,

Don't touch that tranny!=20

You may very well have the best Miata setup for application of
high HP to the ground...at least for straight line acceleration.

It's just that you are contemplating unexplored territory, AFAIK.

Go ahead with a turbo...then use the boost control solenoid to
dial it in to the tranny. =A0Ease into the boost with an upward sloping
boost curve rather than a sudden surge of power all at once.
Then at the autotrannys shift point, cut back on the boost just a=20
bit to allow for gear change to take place at less than full boost.
Boost curve might look like: 140, 160, 180, 180, 180, 180, 180, 160,
or similar, you get the idea.

There are times when I wish my car was a turbo automagic...

Keep us posted.
