Hi all,

Well, leaving a stoplight, light load, but starting to accelerate hard -
BANG - diff gone. Car is a '92 with LSD. From what I've read, I can get the
Mazdaspeed replacement or the newer Torsen LSD. Does this sound correct?

Problem is - I was planning on taking the car to North Carolina Thursday...
any way for this to happen? Does anyone keep the Mazdaspeed units in stock?
What is actual replacement time for the Torsen swap?

I know, it's a lot of questions, but I really am in a bind on this one. BTW,
the car has the FM2 turbo, so would either of the options be preferable?

BTW - As a data point - I was hearing a continuous whine from the diff for
the past few thousand miles. Seemed to reach a resonance at 45 mph. Would
only do it under constant load. Got louder as time went by and was noticing
it quite a bit earlier today (guess I know what it was now...)

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd
'90 Audi Coupe quattro (probably going to North Carolina)
'92 Black Miata (very large paperweight now)
'84 Jeep Scrambler (It's a Jeep...)

Any idea what the cost is on that? Or time to install?

I think it probably is just the ring and pinion, because the diff was
transfering power properly before... at the same time as I really want to
take the car, I don't want to just cobble something together...

Thanks for the info,
Todd

Todd,

If you're REALLY in a hurry, best bet (at least temporarily) is to
replace the ring and pinion gears in your current diff, since
it sounds like that's really what broke. You may even get
lucky and find a local dealer that can get the gears in a day
or two. But in the long term, it's probably best that you go
with the 94+ torsen setup not necessarily because of the
diff strength, but because the larger ring gear diameter can
handle more torque.

Good luck,
-Sal Carnevale
