I'm sure most of us know my situation with my 2nd motor (the new one) how it
lost 4 quarts of oil. The motor started tapping, and I though for sure (as
did the shop) that my new motor was toast. Well, turns out the ONLY damage
was a bruised ego (mine) and a slightly worn #2 rod bearing. So, we're
replacing the mains and rod bearings. The sound of $500ish is MUCH better
than the cost of a new crate motor!!
The shop suspects my driving (constant redlining) and the Mobil 1 10/30 do
not agree. I am going to be using the same Castrol 20/40 they use in the race
Porsches. Thats what they recomend, so Im having ALL my serivices done at GT
just so there's no question in case something goes wrong...
Just thought I'd spread the news!!

've heard it's not good to use synthetics in brand new motors anyway. The
theory I've heard is that since it's so slippery, it doesn't have the
detergent qualities that help everything seat properly. Don't know if it's
true or not........

The theory is a good one, but the explanation can use a little help.
The idea is that there are parts that need to fit together well (like
bearings on a crank) that need just a little wear in order to "break in"
correctly. With the superior lubricity of a good synthetic oil, they may not
get the chance to do that.
So the idea is to use ordinary dino oils for the first 10,000 or so miles,
which gives the bearing surfaces a chance to become properly mated to each
other, then switch over to synthetics.
Frankly, I think it's probably not necessary for a number of reasons, but
it's simple enough to do, and that many miles on dino isn't going to hurt any
engine.

that is what I thought too, but some manufacturers recommend synthetic in
brand new motors too- my BMW has 5w30 synthetic per specs. I broke my '93's
motor in with dino juice and switched to synthetic @5K...

So, where did the lost 4 quarts of oil go? A worn rod bearing would have
just pumped extra back into the sump - not made it disappear.

I purchased the following vehicles new and I switched over to synthetic as
soon as I got them home (with less than 50 miles, exception being the Miata
which I purchased new over 500 miles away:).
1983 El Camino
1985 CJ-7
1987 Mazda B2000 SE
1989 Bronco
2001 Miata
In 1996 I purchased a f-250 diesel (now with 98K miles) and have stayed with
dino (Mobil Delvac) oil due to it being a diesel.
Granted most of them I didn't have longer than two years, but when they were
sold, they didn't burn any oil and the oil was still clean on the dipsticks.
The El Camino had 80K miles just after two years, no "wear in" (?) problems.
The '89 Bronco I drove for 7 years (and my neighbor's still driving it), no
"wear in" problems.
Dunno about others, but I have had zero problems/complaints after switching
to synthetic immediately after getting the vehicle home... 2cts. :)
