(email redacted) (Dennis B. Swaney) says:

<< "So, what you are saying, Sonya, is that any cosmetic action on a Miata is
to be considered "rice"? I don't agree. Everybody knows about the added
horsepower from a VooDoo knob... ">>

and (email redacted) (Hank Harvey) says:

<< "Normally I find very little to disagree with Sonja on, but I gotta take
issue here. I think your being a little tough on folks. I mean, aside from
maybe yourself, how many of us never add one danged thing to our cars that
can't be directly attributed to an improvement it it's road handling and
performance prowess? >>

Ouch guys, LOL! I thought I was clear, but obviously should have been more
specific. I have no problems at all with purely aesthetics mods. I have
defended "style considerations" on this list many a time and I have no wish
to come across as the Mrs. Grundy of the accessory departement. :)

I love "goodies" as much as anyone. I become green with envy everytime I see
sexy customizations (anyone remembers the "Pepe le Pew" Miata at "Miata at
the Ranch"?), even extreme ones (thinking about the fab body made in Seattle
that could have come out of one of Pinin Farina's wet dreams). I am easily
seduced by Voodoo knobs, fancy pedals, loud horns, nose mods etc... and I
become a total maniac when it comes to beautiful grills, headlights, and
lovingly polished and chromed engine compartment goodies. I am going to add a
Eunos nose badge after waiting all these years for a Pollo Rampante to adorn
Old Blue's schnozz. In fact I could qualify an accessory slut to the
detriment of my pocketbook, LOL.

What I was talking about was quite specific. I abhor non-functional items
that pretend to be something they are not. I am talking of faux exhausts,
mufflers designed purely for noise, ersatz air scoops, fake wire wheels cum
phoney knock off hubs, stickers that tout components never installed, the
hyped up BO valves and boondoggled "roll cages" I just read about (ACK) and
of course... safety pretenders such as the so-called style bars that have
been the focus of this thread. All of the above represent to me
quintessential "ricing".

It may be that my I was warped for life by Ayn Rands' "Fountainhead", but for
the better or for the worst I prefer something to be what it claims to be and
not a cheap travesty of the real thing. As my old gran'pappy used to say "If
it ain't what it is, it ain't worth a damn" :)

Sonja, you could never be mistaken for Mrs. Grundy.

It appears I must have either misread or misinterpreted your previous
comments. Perhaps it was just me being cranky and spoiling for a fight,
that's been known to happen on occasion. Shame on me! At any rate I now
understand more clearly where your coming from and agree with you for the
most part. It's comforting to know that the mythical 'only if it improves
performance' aftermarket buff is still just that.. a myth. :)

Run quick, stay safe...
